Utilities Poll - Week 3

This week's topic: Hard Drive Cleaners

Your input will determine the programs chosen to bear the proud title "S-M Approved", so make sure and vote!

We all like to remove the junk that inevitably builds up on our hard drives (temp files, browser cache, etc). What's your favorite way to do that?

Please add your comments and opinions in this thread! Once this project is complete there will be an article written detailing the "S-M Approved" utilities. Knowing "what" you prefer would be great. Knowing "why" you prefer it would be even better.

Since there are about a bajillion disk cleaning utilities out there, I will attempt to modify the poll if one of the "Other" votes gets way more votes than one I've already listed.

Prof

Note: Thanks for the great response last week ! The voting was close - all of your comments and all software receiving votes will be mentioned when the Short-Media Approved Utilities list is published.

I tend to use a variety of different programs, but I guess more often than not, I use the bog standard Microsoft Windows Disk Cleanup. However just recently I have also been using Winner Tweak's file cleanup utility, however like I said Disk Cleanup gets my vote.

    Cheers

Well originally it was just BEAST, then I upgraded and it became SUPERBEAST, then I upgraded again to my current system, and ULTRABEAST was born.;D

I also might add, with regard to the topic at hand, I use Norton Cleansweep on occasion, but I find the interface less than functional, so I don't use it as my primary disk cleaner.

Windows Disk Cleanup combined with repeated iterations of Windows Disk Defragmenter until I'm satisfied with the results, and occasionally the use of Scandisk with all boxes checked (reboot required  )

Windows Disk Cleanup for me but I've been testing:
    http://www.langa.com/cleanup_bat.htm
    And:
    http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm

For what it's worth here are the extensions I use when using a cleaner utility:

    *.~*,~*.*,*.---,*.tmp,*._mp,*.old,*.bak,*.syd,*.chk,mscreate.dir,0???????.nch,*.nu*,*.log

I'm learning to rename my install log files so they don't get washed.

I haven't decided yet, but I like the sound of MECHABEAST, thanks for that one. My next upgrade will probably be a completely new computer built from scratch, so it will probably get a new fresh name. But if I do manage to squeeze one more upgrade out of ULTRABEAST, MECHABEAST is now a high contender for the updated name.:topic:

Just out of interest people, how often do guys clean your hard disks? I tend to do mine + registry every few days. Is that a bit over the top?

I just use the one in window. I used to use Norton but it didn't clean it. I want something that will clean everything that's displayed in diskcleaner, logs, temp files, system restore points, etc. but I have to do it manually :aol:

...I've discovered that it doesn't fully clean your browser cache. I always follow it up with PC Pitstop's IE cache cleaner.
