Converting internal CD-RW to external

My girlfriend is moving away from home this year to go to college, and she wants to take the CD-RW that she installed (and paid for) in her parents computer with her, to use with her laptop. Problem is, the drive is internal....IDE and whatnot, and her laptop is a laptop. I got to thinking, could one purchase one of those ~20$ external hard drive adaptors and just rip it up to get the connectors out? she says she doesnt care how ghetto it is, if it works, and doesn't cost too much. Ideas?

Heh I had seen something like that. I was speaking strictly from a cost perspective. I've seen USB 2.0 external hard-drive adaptors for not very much (some as low as 10-20 bucks)...I'm just curious if they're "hackable"

dude you're not considering size. how the **** are you going to fit a 5.25" cd-rw drive in a 2.5" enclosure

I think he's thinking of removing the electronics from the little, cheap hard drive enclosure and using it with the CDROM drive.
