OC newbie

Okies, here's the deal.

I've got an A7N266-C with an AMD 1800 XP slapped on with stock HSF with 512mb PC2700 on a single stick in Slot 1.

The hardware monitor in the Bios says the CPU temp is 35C. I think I can go a little higher than that, perhaps up to 38 or 40 (Some education on a max temp roof for the 1800 would be appreciated :D )

Problem is, and it's gotta be my fault, that when I try to up the multiplier in BIOS, it resets, after I "Save Changes and Exit" and reboot. I'm sure there's something else I have to change, perhaps a jumper on the board, or something in the BIOS. I've changed nothing else on my part. Alienware (It was a gift PC.. can't complain) may have changed something, but I didn't see anything related to OC'ing on the papers they included with the PC. It gives a single system speaker beep after BIOS closes and the system restarts, if it's relevant.

Also, whats a program I can use to monitor CPU/MB/Fan speed temp from Windows?

The CPU is locked. Only the latest generation of boards have been including unlocking ability through BIOS. If you want to OC this chip, you'll most likely have to unlock it by hand, and that's not a fun process IMO.

Well you could oc it a little by the fsb. The bottleneck there is going to be your mobo, the memory should support it fine, along with the cpu. Try raising in incrememnts of 5, if you get a bsod increase vcore by .5 rinse and repeat. If your voltage is @ 1.85 already and it stil is not stable then lower the fsb by 1 until stable.

BTW: for the program you can use... Do a google search for MotherboardMonitor. Good app.

FYI: Mother Board BOIS's DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT unlock AMD Chips!!!!! The TBreds come FACTORY Unlocked UNLIKE the Pallys, TBirds and Slot A's. I argued this point many a day back on Icrontic but no one understood what I was saying. if you still don't understand what I'm saying just stick a Pally into a "new" board and attempt to change the Multiplier.....

Creep is right; the L1 bridges have to all be connected like the Tbred and MP pally's proc's are for the multipliers to be changed in bios.

With that said, you should be able to overclock by the front side bus speed like Al said. You should have some setting in bios that allows you to set the fsb speed.
