Windows XP Pro -- will not let me boot up without cd inserted

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
Hello all,

I am having a problem similar to others that I have read, but the answers given still do not seem to answer my problem. My problem is this:

Once I turn on the computer, it goes through startup processes as they normally would. BIOS runs its checks as normal and there are no reported errors. However, once the startup sequence comes to bootup from cd or hdd, it checks for the cd and i get the following error:

Verifying DMI Pool Data.......
Boot from CD:
Boot from CD:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

if I hit enter, it clears the screen and gives the same error over and over. I tried this numerous times just to see if it is a constant error or just something that happens randomly. It is not random. Interestingly enough, When I then insert the Win XP Pro cd and hit enter, it gives the same error again. However, every time I start up with the cd in the drive to begin with, it boots normally by going through the same process, displaying "press any key to boot from CD...." and when i do not boot from cd it goes right into windows without a problem.

I am completely ablivious as to what the problem may be. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out here. My system specs are as follows:

ABIT IS7 motherboard
2.8 GHz Intel P4 800MHz FSB
1 WD 37GB Raptor 10k RPM SATA drive
2 Seagate 40GB Barracuda 7200 RPM drives
GeForce FX 5200 128 MB

if there are any other components i did not list that may make a difference please let me know.
thank you all very much for your help!

hmm i have tried reformatting several times to no avail. I could live with having to put the cd in but it is just getting way too annoying

If you've tried reformatting and it still does that, then I would suspect a hardware problem. First, check your memory:

    www.memtest.org

Then you might want to check your boot drive. It could be a master boot record problem..

Looks like Windows finds a previous installation on one of your other drives but some of the boot files are missing from the root directory.

Do you have your Windows installation on the Raptor and want to boot off it?
If you do, make sure in your BIOS that you have your Hard Disk Boot Priority set to OnBoard SATA. If possible, have one of the boot devices is set to SCSI/RAID.
