Short Thought - Monday 9th August

One can ponder alot when sitting back in the chair at a suppliers establishment.

My thought right now?

"What the hell is going to happen here when they try to install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP?! These guys don't have an IT admin but have a hell of a potentially troublesome network".

Should SME's beware?...

Consider the average small biz. Especially one like I am at right now as I type. They have a Windows 2003 domain with a collection of XP desktops. It's all very shiny and new. However, not a soul in the place really understands what they have here. Sold up the river for a dream of this wonderful system with almost no training to back it up. That's far from disrespectful just honest. Make no mistake, there is a tremendously talented collection individuals here. They are very good at what they do, but they have zero IT skills beyond using the desktop to collect email and write docs/specs.

Now consider the impact of Mr Automatic Windows Update.

 <--- eek indeed.

So the wringer has been pulled continously about the "security center" element in Windows XP. But the arguments are absolutely fair here. Especially with the firewall being on by default. It's a great feature no doubt but it's not going to help those who do not understand it. Now consider what happens when Joe B logs on and his PC reboots having almost completely silently installed SP2.

Dum de dum. What would you do if you were not so tech savvy? Probably panic. Especially when you get a collection of popup windows screaming about security, antivirus and popup stopping. They start using IE for answers and their browser won't open windows that use to open. Ahhhhhhhhh...

Thanks Mr PopUp Stopper. Nice of you to jump in there.

Perhaps one is being sarcastic or negative? Depends on how you view it. Not everyone is tech savvy. Some end users are going to have as much pain as the IT admins screaming murder at MS already.

IT admins almost fear SP2. I think we are going to find more than a few end users feeling the same feeling... without even knowing it until it's too late to stop it. It's almost like a train wreck.

In closing. As an admin, I've got some major testing to do before letting loose on my occasionely cranky systems in my workplace. Already we can hear the screams of admins around the globe, as applications suddenly stop working that the workplace relies on. Confusion, puzzled expressions from staff members who don't quite understand that more secure Windows (for all it's good) has just nuked a business critical application (yes it could happen).

So I ask again? Should companies with no IT/staff with good IT skills worry?

I think they should. It's going to cost a few companies alot of time and some companies (just like the one I am sitting at right now) won't know it.. until it's too late.

These are the opinions of the author only. Take 'em how you wish as always, even if it's with a pinch of salt and a nice chianti ;)

Well We're installing it here at Sarcnet. If things look ok after a day or two of running it, I'll prolly set it up at home.

I see SP2 as rehab for Windows XP. The first steps after a major car crash are always painful.

But if the crash blocks up the motorway (highway in your lingo) for a few weeks....

    That's one badass crash.

Thrax, you are have XP desktops at school don't you? You ready to roll? ;)

So the question is still - To install or not install. What's the answer for home users as myself? i noticed that you posted a link to an install for admins and pros but according to m$ i should wait for the version i get via windows update. Should i install or wait. I know i can install xp since i've done it many times but i can think of about 100 other things i'd rather do. If i wait how long would it take before a stable version is out.

May god have mercy on their souls at their loss ;D

Eyes... I've installed in an attempt to prove my thoughts right (or wrong if they are).

I stand by what I said yesterday :)

Funny thing about it, the person that they employed in my place is a PHP wizard.. But doesn't know one thing about PCs beyond that. And I mean that quite literally. He's the specialist, the person you never call on for anything else but PHP.

So true. Don't answer me then since as of now there are several posts on the subject. I'll just read 'em and see what people like you find out.
