AMD Athlon XP 3200 Pro?

A local computer store is selling a "complete system" (with no monitor mind you) for a wicked cheap price.. or at least thats what it seems. Its not for me, just a cheap box for my girlfriend.

Here is the description of the cpu/mobo:

AMD XP3200 Pro
ECS L7VMM3 Mother board

I called and asked why it was so cheap (not taking note of the "3200 Pro", just assuming it was a "3200+") and they said "its because its an Athlon XP Pro, not +, it runs slower, approximately 1.6-1.7ghz.

there is no trace of this mobo on the ecs website and no trace of "pro" athlons on amd's website. Does anyone know anything about these? Some reading material, benchmark comparisons, and/or a brief description would be nice.

IIRC its an AMD duron, its a PRO+ they shouldn't use XP. The numbering system has been "made up" by ECS and is not anything that's official as far as I know. Don't expect decent performance from that system and the CPU is integrated so you can't upgrade. It'll do ok for a websurfing box but you can get a full motherboard with all the same specs and an upgradable processor for the same price and with more performance (for example the ASROCK Sis 741 board + AMD XP 2000+ for ~ $130-$140 cdn).

Well, from what you guys have told me so far this is a good deal. this isnt a gaming box - its just a web surfing/word processing box..

    its a "3200 Pro" w/ 512mb
32mb integrated Piece of crap video card
    60gb maxtor 7200rpm
generic case w/ front usb & 350w psu
    speakers+sub
    keyboard
    mouse
    for $250 cdn + tax

    cant beat that, really.

Ummm, not to rain on your parade or anything, but DON'T BUY THAT BOX!

You can easily get superior hardware for around the same price. Some of the resident Canadians will have to help you out since i always order from newegg, but there has got to be an internet based store that serves Canada....i just don't know of it.

Do yourself and your girlfriend a favor, and skip this deal....besides it could earn you some extra points in her book to spend a little more and get something that is quality...

i dont need points i've been with her 5.5 years :P

this is a no hassle setup man, it comes with xp home, it comes with a mouse and keyboard, and i already gave her a 17" monitor. i dont wanna go through the annoyance of clearing my desk off to setup this hunk of junk to build it and install winblows, etc. :P

    btw:
    case: at least $10
    psu: at least $10
    60gb 7200rpm: $44.99 (cheapest on pricewatch)
    mobo: $75
    cpu: $75
    keyboard: $8
    mouse: $8
    total: $230USD ($302 cdn)

i dont really see any place to cut 50 bucks cdn off of that price to match it, and at the same time still gotta add some ****ty speakers, mouse pad, windows xp, etc

Nope, @ $250 Canadian, = about $170 US, I don't think there's anything cheaper to be had short of a used system. Especially with an O/S license included.
