The Rest Of The Story, and A Request For A Little Advice

Several months ago I contracted a dose of spyware , which led me to this forum in a desperate search for assistance. I read as many of the threads as were available and even tried posting a plea for help but before I was able to complete that, my Windows XP either crashed, or became too difficult to use.

It simply got down to running HiJack This , acquiring a list of the programs running in the background and their associated files, and then choosing which to delete. I appreciate the willingness of you guys, to assist me and while I have since reformated my operating system, I have again found myself in need of some advice.

I intentionally loaded with Netscape , rather than IE, and now I feel a little less vunderable to spyware. However I need to install an anti-viris program, and in preparing to do this I purchased Norton 2004 A/V Professional. Then on the box , I read that," Required For All Installations : DVD or CD-ROM Drive AND Internet Explorer 5.01 SP or better IE 5.5.

This caused me some stress so I returned to the Computer store, and looked at the McAfee stuff, ditto on the IE requirements.

Question #1 Should I just load up the Norton ?

Question #2 Is there another Anti-viris program that is better for my application ? This is a home use setup, but I want to be able to browse wherever.

Is there truth in the idea that not using IE, but rather another browser, will eliminate most spyware threats ?

You can use the norton no problem. You still have IE on your system, as it cannot be removed from windows (thus all that litigation)... So, just install norton, continue using netscape, and enjoy your (hopefully) spyware- and virus-free computer :)

Internet Explorer is used by around 90 to 95% of web surfers today. It follows logically that most spyware applications will be tailored to IE. But there are other excellent browser options available for free such as Mozilla, Firefox and Opera. These are covered in Primesuspect's
Defeating Spyware article, and download links are available there as well.
