Apparently my friend got himself into a bind..every time he right clicks he sees the phrase "hardcore porn" in his menu...how does one get rid of this

Err... that link only works when you right click a directory.....

What exactly does he right click to see it? That might help find a better way....

Is it when he right clicks on the desktop? Does he know how it got there? If it isn't a virus it could be some application he installed. Removing it should remedy the situation. However if he honestly doesn't now how it got there then, perhaps a virus sweep would be in order. I would check through the add/remove programs list, and see if there is anything in there which doesn't look like it should be. You never know, he may have accidentaly downloaded a porn phone dialer or something. Does it actually do anything when you click it?

It is just probably a rogue application of some sort. His system probably just needs a good once over with a 'registry cleaner' and an 'uninstall unessential apps' program.;)

Let us know when you get some more information.

    Cheers

I found a program called ContextEdit from PCMagazine. I can't download it form them because I don't subscribe to their magazine.. but if your friend or you do...

    ContextEdit

Looks like exactly what you need... :)

Spinner is right... do a virus scan.. maybe an Ad-aware scan while you're at it.

After I regained my composure, a possible solution did occur to me:

Search the registry for "hardcore porn". It might take a few minutes, but you should find it. Make sure you go through the registry twice to get every instance. Also, make sure your friend is savvy enough to edit the registry without causing even more trouble.

If the Menu Item is on everything in Windows Explorer, then I think that the Registry is not going to help you. I had the understanding that Contextual Menu Items were not in the Registry, but in a dll. The "OK" he ever-so-stupidly clicked on launched an installer that modified this dll to install it's own menu items.

    Just a sec...

    Yep..."shell32.dll"

Here are some links to get you in the right direction, a resource hacker tool, and a tutorial:

DISCLAIMER: I have no experience using these tools myself, but I am pretty sure they just do what you need to do. You may have to search for a bit to find the "hardcore porn" label, it is probably in everry menu, so it will be there more than once.
