Networking between two computers over the net?

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
Hey all,

I have a friend who wants to be able to access another friend's computer (something like on a server level), yet one computer is on broadband and the other is on dial-up. The purpose is that they want to access each other's files.

Is there some kind of p2p-style software out there that they could use with only their computers? They are only accessing their own, not others, so the software would have to work on a personal level.

I should add that they also want to stream from one computer (music, videos) to the other computer. The source computer is on broadband.
Any ideas?

    Try that for starters :)

The server would be the broadband machine :)

    Oh, that's so sweet....

The sweet part is that the other guy with the dial-up is getting broadband. This oughta get things going.

Thanks, shorty. I never noticed that feature in win XP.

Remote access is cool, if you want to control another computer. if you only want to share files you should setup FTP servers......

Just to update you guys, on my search for the solution to my friend's problem.

I did find a media streamer for remote computers, and it works great. If you haven't heard of it before it's called Streamsicle. Very nice, easy to set up. It broadcasts from your own computer to others on the 'net. I haven't found what it uses for a bitrate and other the other nuances of the program, but it was sweet to set up.
