the computer is running slow, and it sounds like it's constantly running, searching for something. when i have more than one web page up and try to get out of one, it hangs up and i have to wait a minute or so for it to finally close. while that page is hanging, i can't view any other pages until the other one finally unhangs. i get an occasional illegal operation ( explorer page fault, i think) and i also got an illegal operation when i tried running spybot. here is a new log for you to look over. any help would be greatly appreciated. and one more question...in my add/delete programs...there is a midADadle, My Web Search (Smiley Central), PGate Basic, SEP, URL Display, and Win-Tools Easy Installer....what are these and are they important??

Thanks,
:Rocker:

    Welcome Back :)

Ok, for starters, I see that your Hijack This is running right on the C drive. Please make a directory called c:\HJT, and put Hijack This.exe into that folder.

Next, when you paste your log, please include all the information. You are missing the info from the very top, which shows us what version of Hijack This you are running, what Windows OS you are running (I'm guessing Windows 98 based on some of the files in your log), and what version of Internet Explorer you are running. That info is important. Are you using HJT version 1.98?

There are a couple of items we can clean up in your log, but first:
    scrumptous wrote:

in my add/delete programs...there is a midADadle, My Web Search (Smiley Central), PGate Basic, SEP, URL Display, and Win-Tools Easy Installer....what are these and are they important??

Those are leftover from the stuff we cleaned out last time. Do not run those uninstallers, some of them will re-install the crap we already removed. If they bug you being there, I can give you a link to a program called Easy Cleaner which can delete those from your Add/Remove list for you.

What you should do is go into your C:\Program Files directory while in SAFE MODE, and find any folders that match up to those items, like WinTools, My Web Search (probably a folder called MYWAY.) Then we can clean the Add/Remove list later. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN IT IS SCUMWARE. CHECK WITH US FIRST.

Ok, while in SAFE MODE, run HJT and FIX:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Privacy Suite] C:\PROGRAM FILES\CLEAN GET-AWAY\\CGETWY.exe RunAtStartUp

(This program is really spyware / adware. Do not use it. Delete this entry, then manually delete the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\CLEAN GET-AWAY. If you need something to "clean" your browser history, do it manually, or the Easy Cleaner program I mentioned can also do that, without being adware itself.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

(This is an updater for Quicktime, and does not need to run at startup.)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [areslite] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ARES LITE EDITION\ARESLITE.EXE" -h

(Are you using Ares Lite for Peer-to-Peer downloads? If not, remove this. If you are using it, likely you are getting your spyware infections by not being careful what you download here.)

Let's start with that, give us a fresh log when you are done, and make sure to post the log header data for us.

    Thanks, Dexter
OK, first, I'm not very computer literate, so I'm not sure how to make a directory (c:\HJT). Don't laugh too hard. Also, I've included the omitted part of the HJT log. Sorry about that. As for the Ares, it is being used regularly for downloads. If you think that is causing most of the problem, it can be removed. After I rescan in safe mode and fix those problems, I'll include another log.

    Thanks, Dexter

    Whit

oops..forget to include the omitted part of the log

1 - Download Hijack This version 1.98 from our server. Click on the link in my signature to the Security Downloads page.

2 - open my computer. Double click Local Disk C: When that opens, right-click, and selet New Folder. Right click and rename the folder to HJT. Drag Hijack This.exe into that folder.

    3 - Ares Lite:

    http://www.download.com/Ares-Lite/3000-2166-10288301.html
Editor's note: This download includes adware bundled with the software's installer file. Adware may record your surfing habits, deliver advertising, collect private information, or modify your system settings. Pay close attention to the end user license agreement and installation options. For more information on adware and spyware, please visit our Spyware Center.

I just told another user something this morning about "Flashget." Flashget is believed to contain adware. It is mostly used for downloading MP3's and porn faster, and we all know that free programs designed for that are always 100% legit, adware and spyware free, right...? Ares Lite falls into the exact same category. You may derive some benefit (MP3's or porn) but you are willingly exposing yourself to the adware or spyware it contains. If you choose not to uninstall it, then I can't feel too sorry if your computer runs slow or has pop-up ads. And, if you are running a Win98 computer, my guess is that it is older, has a slow processor, not much RAM, etc, so it is probably slow to being with. With adware willingly installed in your computer, you are making it even slower. Your choice. :)

I would uninstall Ares Lite via the Add/Remove Control panel, then remove those entries in HJT if they still exist after the uninstall.

Kazaa Lite is, in my opinion, the best P2P app, because it is spyware free, uses little resources, will actually close when you want it to, and actually adds blocks to your hosts file to prevent ads from showing up on your system. If you want something to surf P2P's for music or porn, use that instead.

I tried dowloading the 1.98 version, but I can't open it because of the .zip. Any way around that? LIke I said, I'm not very computer literate. My system is an older system and I am running Wins 98. I think I redid the new HJT folder right. I'll also uninstall Ares through the Add/Remove paner, and will check into the Kazaa Lite. Thanks for that info. I've included a new HJT log for you to review. Can I fix anything that has Ares in it, or should I wait for you to look over it before fixing anything?

    Thanks,
    Whitney

Install Winzip. That will let you open the Zip archive. Then drag the Hijack This.exe out of the Zip window, and into the new folder called HJT on your C drive that you should have made after my last post.

One you do that, we can delete a whole bunch of unnecessary startup items that are taking up RAM on your system.

Sorry, I lost track of your thread here....

    Watchdog: http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=3121

Something that came with your computer, but it would be fine to disable it. Ditto for the easy access buttons. And the Compaq Internet Setup.

    These 2:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickenSEMessage] C:\QUICKENW\QSEMSG.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BillMinder] C:\QUICKENW\BILLMIND.EXE

are only needed if you use Quicken to track and remind you of bill payments.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MSN MESSENGER\MSNMSGR.EXE" /background

Those auto-run MSN Messenger and Messenger Plus 3 at system startup. You can disable those, and just launch them manually when you need them, which will save you a minute or so off your boot-up time.

    O4 - Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

Winzip Tray Menu, not needed by most users.

And Ares Light, we already discussed. :)
