hi, ppl
im new here and this is my first post. i have a queston
one more thing,i did read a lot of forums but i couldn't make up my mind.

first of all no mobile processors are availabe where i am. :bawling: :banghead:
as the new bartons are locked and cannot be unlocked, what should i get.
get some older athlon with T-berd core which can be unlocked or
get a new barton which is locked.
which would be a better choice considering performance both in case of overclocking and not overclocking.(since bartons have larger L2 cache)
i would appreciate any comments.
sorry if the question is too long

aaalrighty then

    Welcome to Short-Media!

If you are only able to buy locally, I'd say your best bet is to pick up an XP2500+ Barton CPU. It's got an 11x Multi, so if you decide to OC the processor, you can pretty easily bump it up to 200FSB, and get 2.2GHz out of the CPU. If you don't OC it, the XP2500+ is a decent performer in its own right.

You could always find a friend where mobile athlons ARE available and have them ship one to you...

I'd go for the BArton 2500+ too, I've been running mine at 200*11 for over a year and it's never had a problem, gives exactly the same performance as a 3200+

Ditto to the above posts. 2500+ Barton all the way. Locked is no big deal with the right board and RAM. I love mine and suggest them in all of my builds.

I'll go along with the 2500+ too, if a locked proc is all you have access to. Like primesuspect said though, you could always order a mobile from online, if you live in the US. Newegg now takes Paypal and you can also pay with a money order there too, but a money order will take extra time.

BTW, welcome to the Short-Media forums. :)

    hi

thanx guys. i really appreciate ur response. ;D

i do NOT live in the US and i am not sure newegg or other online retailers ship things overseas

i read couple of these articles on the net which tell that desktop xp(locked, manufactured after week 39) can be converted to mobile or MP(multi processor enbled)by doing some bridge work. u know these things better, so tell me if u understan it.

    http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/guides/unlockbartonwk43/unlockbartonwk43-1.htm

    and this

    http://www.cpuheat.wz.cz/html/AXP_multiplier/AXP_Multiplier.htm

are these methods of any use?

I would not physically mess with the processor, seems kinda dodgy to me and the risk of messing it up seems to far outweigh the benefits of taking it further than an Abit NF7 can. If you want, You can tell me what you want from new egg and I will order and send it to you if you can't get what you are looking for where you are. Just PM me with the details.

Yeah, see that's what I meant - I know you don't live in the US but someone will be willing to ship it to you.

    hi,

those links were for the experienced oc'ers.
but i certainly will not try so quickly to play phycically with the processor.i just wanted to see if,in any way,i could prolong the life of my system by physical mods(definitly after a long time, and much more knowledge)
and to buy the best possible mobo.
but my brothers, the problem is, i live in PAKISTAN, my knowledge says that its quite far far away from US, so the shipping charges from US to Pakistan will be much more than the processor itself :rolleyes:
i truly appreciate ur offers.(bye the way, try to find how much money it takes to ship a processor from US to Pakistan, just for fun.if u can)

    aaalrighty then

I don't think it would be as much as you think. Processors are happily small and very light. :)

    noman:

If you can get the processor to Pakistan (the Mobile) do it!

Mailing won't cost all that much..just make sure you have it mailed with insurance.

BTW, I've shipped Mobile's to Taiwan and to England and never had any problem...it CAN be done!
