SM15 Reborn!

A few weeks ago Kwiko recieved a package at work and low and behold it was SM15. We got one of our non-operational machines back. Once we got ahold of reelbigfish he got on the trolley and sent the Machine back to Seth. A new HDD and she is ready to GO!

So here I am asking for another fine member from Team Short-Media to host an SMx machine, SM15.

SO anyone that meets there requirements and wants to host an SMx Machine put your name in the hat.:) Best wishes to all.
These are the requirements to be selected as an SMx Host. Please note that these requirements are subject to revision.

1) Team member must be in good standing and have shown dedication to Team Short-Media and the Folding@Home project for the long haul. Past participation and contributions are taken into account.

2) The member must be able to provide the computer with a safe and secure environment for an extended period of time - this means an indeterminate period.

3) You must be knowledgeable in building computers and loading operating systems, and all that is entailed. In the event the rig should fail, the host is expected to make a good effort in trying to repair the rig and report to the team what is going on.

4) Dedicated, "always-on" Internet connection 24/7, 56K and up, and a free port on an existing network (we don't normally supply routers/hubs/switches with the SMx rig). If the internet connection should fail, the host is expected to make good faith efforts to get back online as soon as is possible.

5) The computer must run and "fold" 24/7. (Yes, the Team is generous enough to allow you to go on vacation and turn it off.) Keep in mind that 24-hour operating will increase your electricity bill by up to a few dollars per month. The Team expects the host to make good faith efforts to keep the rig running as much as is possible.

6) The computer shall fold for Team #93 under the user name of "SMx" exclusively unless it has been voted on to make it differently. The team will monitor the rig’s output through Stanford’s statistics.

7) In the event the host can no longer host the SMx rig or he/she is not able to run the rig for an extended period of time (due to things like being called to duty in the armed forces, for example) the team must be notified so that a new host can be found by normal host selection process.

8) What does the host get out of this? The pride of being able to host a SMx Folding rig, one of very few to earn this privilege. To be able to help Team Short-Media be the best team and the F@H project find cures.

9) Hosts must provide contact information such as phone number and address in case an emergency contact needs to be made.

10) Hosts must sign the hosting contract before the computer will be shipped to them.

11) New hosts must be 18 years of age or older.

Disclaimers:

1) All Team-donated parts that go into a SMx donated Folding@Home computer are property of the Short-Media.com Folding@Home Team.

2) Short-Media.com, and/or its owner(s), and/or administrator(s), and/or moderator(s), and/or member(s), shall not be held responsible or liable for any losses incurred either directly, or indirectly as a result of hosting any SMx rig. The host selected shall bear full responsibility for said rig. By applying to be selected as a host, you acknowledge you understand, agree with, and will abide by these rules as set forth here and as may be amended in the future as required.

Important Note:

This entire project and the rules set forth above is/are based on TRUST. We, the team, trust that you, the host, will do all you can to keep the rig folding as much as is possible, in its name, for the Short-Media.com Folding Team. You, the host, trust, that we, Team Short-Media, support you in every way we can.

Awesome! About time we got it back! Good luck to all the entries. I'd go for it, but 1) I'm not 18 and 2) I don't Fold very much anymore :(

This machine has a Shuttle AK35GT2 KT266A mobo and a XP1600+ proc, so this machine should be a real good points producer.

Let's see some volunteers now!

You should add a line to the disclaimer that only us residents can enter since you don't ship internatially. And at the moment i couldn't host even if you did so my name isn't in the hat.

Good luck to whoever gets it though. :):fold:

Not entirely correct. There are a couple of rigs in Canada. :)

Also, we should have another European based SMx rig to put up for hosting pretty soon also, so that should satisfy our team emembers across the pond.

Yea, there has to be other members who would love to host a SMx box. How could you not take up this opportunity for this. If we don't have anymore people that would like to host, then who is going to host the other boxes we build.

I would but when I get called for the next shut-down, my little "garden" will also be shut down :(

There's got to be a fellow folder that's got room for just 1 more. :)

This is depressing. If only one person signs up for SM15, what does that say for the rest of the project? We have a dual folding rig about ready to go, but nobody will want to host it :(

    What PSU is in SM15?

    Has the RAM been Memtested?

Has the HDD been tested with whatever util IBM uses for that purpose?

Suggestion: Put up a new thread asking for candidates to be the new host.

    Just a thought.

The futhermucker has been folding for a couple of weeks for Kwitko, so why FFS does the goddam thing need all that ****? :banghead: It will either fold or not and it's not like it's a brand new box. If you want to volunteer to be a host then you can run all that shiz if your selected but Kwitko says it's ready so as far as I'm concerned, it's ready to be assigned. Your post sounds like you are accusing Kwitko of knowing nothing about checking a computer out!

    Sorry, mudd. :eek2:

I really didn't mean to offend, nor did I mean to be accusing anyone of anything. I was just wondering about the condition of the typical trouble components, especially considering the condition the PC was in when it arrived at Seth's door. Obviously it's not a brand new box, and PSU, RAM, and IBM HDDs are typical trouble spots on PCs.

Wow... I honestly didn't expect this type of reaction to my post. :sawed:

Yes, I was considering putting my name in the hat, and I didn't think any prospective host would want a a 'problem child' of already bad parts to arrive, necessitating further delays in the actual production of points from SM15, when it would be easy and logical for Seth to have already tested it before shipping (which he probably did, and I was just checking on).

I've been a member of Short-Media since the beginning, and Icrontic for a while before that. I post often, contribute what I can, and support the team with 100% of my effort. My question was certainly not meant to be offensive, and I would hope that by now folks would know me well enough to realize I'd never try to be offensive in such a post, merely helpful.

I probably won't put my name in the hat now, since I'm sure at least mudd would be dead set against me being selected. I'm going to take a break from S-M for a few days and calm the nerves a bit. :bawling:

Now, now.... No need to "break" from S-M and I would vouch for you getting SM-15. I say put "Guy-whos-dumb" in the hat.

Mudd, IMHO, jumped at bit to much for such a simple question posed by you... no biggie.

The PSU is generic as far as I know... we don't have a listing for it on the front page. The RAM is good to go, and the hard drive was just replaced since it was returned without one.

Steady as she goes, Mudd. ;) Just a misinterpretation - remember GHoosdum doesn't read the same staff threads as us where Kwitko explains that stuff. :)

Again, sorry, mudd, about the confusion.

QCH and prime convinced me to come back after a record (during waking hours) 4 hour absence from S-M.

Seth and I have an understanding: I understand that he knows what he's doing. He understands that I send SMx parts when I get the chance... I also understand that he's gonna slap me upside the head next time he sees me. ;)

oooh. ok. i havnt really started closly following the SMx project untill very recently. but dont worry, if i ever did step outa line (which i wont) thesmj WOULD kick my @$$.
in responce to the linked thread, there is NO reason to take a SMx folder off line. my boxes run 24 hrs a day 365.25 days a year (minus power outages and hardware maintenance) even if i am out of town. GRR on the slackers!

GH, if you want to volunteer to be a host, I have no qualms about that. Actually I think that you would be a good choice, along with TTT. I just got mad because you could easily found out if the machine was tested by checking this post in this thread . I do hope that you will volunteer to be a host though; you definitely are a dedicated member of this forum and team.

I'm sorry my last post was so harsh but your post struck me wrong and I overreacted a bit. :eek2:
