OOOOOK... here is the prob.... yesterday Versello (icrontic) introduced me to FTP, i didnt really know anything about it before, and i learned that with an FTP you can download your shared files from everywhere. well... he suggested bulletproof FTP, so i installed it tried it out, get everything set up. but then guess what? it wouldnt connect... nobody can connect to me... so then he thought maybe my isp blocks port 21.. so we changed it to port 6881, that doesnt work either... (btw these ports are/were forwarded) entropy offered some help, so we remote connect (with the windows remote assitance tool thing) in windows. so he takes a look, so then he narrows the problem down to needing a Static IP i was like, OH YEAH i did this before!, but see, i tried going through windows to make a static ip and for some reason that wont work... so i have to do it through my router/dsl modem... gerrr... well, to do that i have to disable NAT... and to disable NAT i have to make a static route (a static ip right?) it gives this message:

"NOTE: If you turn NAT off, you MUST specify a static route for your local subnet. However, if you have configured an Unnumbered IP address then you will not need to disable NAT and/or enter any Static Route."

i dont get what the hell this means.. im such a n00b when it comes to networking... i just want to punch a hole through my monitor...

so here is what i was thinking... i need help from a super network genius to help me out. :( weather it be throught Remote assistance or just through here.. please help me guys... im so frustrated and i really need to get an FTP working to help out a buddy... please help...

Does your router have address mapping (links a MAC address to an IP address when have DHCP running)? Have you opened and forword the port that you want to use for your FTP? If not, try that.

    FTP requires two ports.

You would need to open 20 & 21 for it to work.

You only need a static IP on your machine inside the network.

So if your inside IP address for your PC is 192.168.1.100

Set up for a port forward rule in your router to point ports 20 + 21 to 192.168.1.100

The IP address people would connect to would be your WAN address. That will be in your router under a status page.

Interesting, I never knew about forwording port 20. From my router, I just have port 21 open and forworded to my main rig.

Ok, so it's not a strict requirement but alot of FTP clients still initiate using port 20 and pass data through port 21

Active uses the two and passive uses just 21 :)

I would imagine most would auto-redirect on 21 if 20 wasn't open. I've used 21 only for the last year or so with no problems. I couldn't figure it out. We tried it with GuildFTPd, which takes only a few seconds to have up and running. Nothing worked :(. 20-22 were open even. He says he doesn't have XP's firewall on, and no other software firewalls. Very weird.

My FTP is passive but now that I know that port 20 is also used, that maybe the problem of way I can never connect to my FTP from school.

Nope. If the communication port isn't open and you are using active FTP. The FTP Connection will fail.

I don't think this a software problem. This is a routing problem.

It sounds more like Jengo is confused over how Network Address Translation works.

Quick and easy test (but not a solution) is to install a firewall like Sygate on his machine, then put his network IP into the DMZ on his router. Sygate will detect a running server and you can ok that be take inbound connections.

That way you can see if FTP is working :)

Eh, ok. Oddly enough, I'm not running passive and it works just fine :-/

Try GuildFTPd's router guide. It'll set up the FTP to be passive.

Depends on your router/firewalls firmware. Some are smart enough to detect 21 open and will route active traffic. Some will not :)

Ah, that could be it. I can't see anywhere where it tells me so, and my router's dumber n a doornail, but it could very well be it :)

You guys are UNREAL. You make it sound too easy. Still don't know how it works, but I have been listening to Sally explaining when our network plays up and i can sort of follow it. Just trying to pick up some pointers, lol.

Glad you got it all sorted.
