Performance Slowdown + Browser Hijack ( Log Included )

Greetings,

I'm new to this forum and need some help! Recently I noticed a massive slowdown in performance and shortly after my web browser was being changed every other day. After researching I figured out I have a variant of the CoolWebSearch virus(I think).

So, I ran Spybot Search&Destroy, Adaware, and Norton. I then rebooted and ran HiJackThis .... Log is here :

    Welcome to Short-Media.

    Let's try this:

Download CWShredder, you can get it here => http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml

Next, make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here => http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html.

Reboot in Safe Mode, run CWShredder.

While still in safe mode, run HJT, and fix the following entries:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about_:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about_:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {27F54125-54C9-431B-A00A-E1EAE31ADA12} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\baebpk.dll (disabled by BHODemon)

    O18 - Filter: text/plain - {49B908C6-CAEA-4C2F-83FA-23524516737E} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\baebpk.dll

While in Safe Mode, delete the following file:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\baebpk.dll

Reboot normal, run HJT and post a new log.

After running CWShredder in safemode the file baebpk.dll no longer showed up in HiJackThis. The file was also missing in the system32 directory.

Here is a new log compiled not in safe mode :

My computers performance really hasn't changed even with those files gone. I used to use msconfig to modify my startup applications, could that be a culprit of the memory leaks I am experiencing? If so, what are some steps to remedy this?

    Thank you for your time,

    See this entry:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE

    Check this description:

    http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=626

There are known performance issues with that file, I'd remove it.

    Also, you have:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

Most P2P background apps are resource hogs. Disable it, and switch to a P2P program that does not install extra crap, like Kazaa Lite.

    This:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlienAutopsy] "C:\Program Files\AlienAutopsy\Test_BS.exe" -h

is diagnostic software for your Alienware computer, which lets the manufacturer remotely troubleshoot stuff. If you are out of warranty on this computer, disable that.

Try those items first, if it does not feel any faster, there are some other unneccessary startup items you can get rid of:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe

Other things you can do to improve performance:

    - defrag hard drive(s)
    - check memory (run memtest, available in our downloads area)

Let us know if this helps.

Yes, it is a symptom of CWS (CoolWebSearch, which is what you have.)

Re-follow Vanagon's advice from post 2. But this time, while you are rebooting to safe mode, unplug the computer from the internet. Leave it that way. Do the fixes he gave you. Reboot normally, stay unplugged from the net. Then set a new system restore point, instructions here: http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172591&postcount=4

Then, run HJT, make a new log. Then, plug back into the net, and come here and post that log.

I'm noticing a dramatic increase in memory usage in my active processes. svchost.exe is up around 50-80,000K on average, explorere.exe is the same. My PF usage is at around 300-450mb when no applications are running when it used to be 60-90mb before my infection. *shrug* This is very aggravating.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Did this get any better, or do you still have a high memory usage problem?
