ATI has released a new set of drivers for its Radeon line of graphics cards.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you that all the latest graphics card drivers ATI and otherwise, official and un-official, Omega and non-Omega, can be obtained from both the downloads section here at Short-Media, or from this thread in our forums if you'd prefer to go straight to the cream of the crop. Now, I'm off back to the beach.

As with most CATALYST™ releases performance has increased in various situations. The following performance gains are noticed:

Direct3D driver efficiency has improved considerably. Significant performance gains are noted in multiple "CPU-bound" cases, including 3DMark2001, Aquamark 3, Comanche4, Dungeon Siege, and Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. Typical improvements are in the 1-5% range.
OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.

My understanding was we would have to wait for the 4.9 official's next month for full Doom 3 support, but it would seem ATI have done a pretty good job with the 4.8's in that respect. So I don't know. Any official driver in my opinion is better than a beta, but you'll have to try it out on that particular game. :)
