Do you remember modems? Help me.

OK, we are still in dial-up-hell. It isn't too bad for most stuff, at least my wife doesn't know how bad it is.
The problem is that recently her machine has gotten real slow on the internet.
KT7A
XP2000
512 ram
w2k
Firefox0.9

I don't remember which hardware modem is in her's, maybe a Diamond.
She runs AVG and Adaware faithfully.

Give me some trouble shooting tips.
tks ed

    Get broadband. :buck:

Come on, now. SOMEONE had to say it. :)

Nah, I'm just messin with ya. Honestly, if I ever see another dialup modem, it will be too soon. Those things are the biggest pain in the rump.

Is it ISA? I had a KT7 (maybe KT7A doesn't have the slot) and my nice ISA modem worked in Win98 but Win2k was never stable till I took it out for a PCI.

Maybe the computer has spyware, which can absolutely decimate the tiny bandwidth that you have.... Post a HJT log....

Yes, I know. But broadband in our area has other problems ($$$$$$)

I think that it is PCI, but tonight I'll check.

What speed do you connect at? If it is below 50,000bps then I would call your telephone company to get your line checked for line noise. Other than that, try to install the modem again. From working at an ISP I can tell you, spyware will destroy a dial up connection, I work on computers each day of this. Also try another program besides Ad-ware to catch things that it doesn't.

Check your phone line for noise, check the hardware properties for the BAUD rate settings, not too much you can do with dial up man...

I'd check that out. When we had a dial up we check email a couple of times a day, only went on the net after 6pm (rarely) or for a few hours at weekends when it was cheaper. I got itemised billing for the phone line and realised it was cheaper to go BB, never looked back.

My dial up is $20/mo unlimited.
I didn't suspect the phone line because I have other machines in the house that seem to working fine. Though I'm not on the net much with them, folders, you know.
We usually get 48k and higher.
I really suspect that my ISP is 'downgrading' dialup support and this is all that they are going to give me.

Your ISP couldn't help you with the line noise unless they were also your phone provider. I work for an ISP and we can only do so much before we have to get the telephone company into the situation.
