Pain in the ass keyboard problem

Whenever i restart i hear the post and then a little dud, similar to when you hold down a button on the keyboard too long. This is all before the bios screen. Everytime i hear that dud before the bios screen my keyboard and mouse don't work.

If i turn it off then turn it on again it works fine. I've tried doing a fresh install, deleting the partition, and even repairing my installation nothing seems to be fixing the issue.

Specs are in my sig and i'm running the latest bios from abit (17), latest nvidia chipset drivers, windows sp1, everything in windows update is updated.

I remember reading a thread somewhere where aj2freak said he had the same problem.

Help.

Guess I should just give the cmos a nice clearing and see if it fixes the problem.

Are you using any PS/2->USB converters on your keyboard and/or mouse?

Was using usb->ps2 adapter because my nf7-s only has 2 usb ports. Decided to remove them and just use usb ports. Went into bios changed usb keyboard and usb mouse to "bios" instead of "os" and so far it seems to have fixed the problem. Also turned off that annoying sata dialog at startup by disabling the onboard sata controller.

If your referring to the little "beep" heard before the POST screen, this is normal. It indicates the memory and CPU initialization is ok.

And FYI, the NF7-s has 6 USB ports. There are the two on the back of the board (next to the RJ-45 port). And there are 2 sets of headers; both supporting 2 USB ports each. My board came with a USB connector that could be connected to one of the two header groups. The other USB header group I use for my case.

The problem I had was fixed by changing the PS/2 ports I had the keyboard/mouse plugged into. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Plug the keyboard into the PS/2 port nearest the PCB of the motherboard.

Also, you can try moving your Keyboard Power jumper (located just behind the PS/2 header).

// Edit: TheSmJ, /me like the sig :D

LOL, no that's not what i was talking about. I consider the cpu and memory beep a part of the post. Because if i dont hear them then i dont post. Also, I meant onboard... I'm not a fan of those blasted pci solutions that come with a million things that i dont need, so i'm going to just install the one from my old computer.

    Similar to this:

PS Thanks aj2 I ended up moving my keyboard to that 1st ps2 slot and putting the mouse in the usb. Seems to work fine at the moment.

I don’t think you understood what I meant about the USB ports Al. The mobo already has the ports; only the connectors themselves are not there.

There are 2 groups of headers on the mobo. Each group of headers is, in fact, 2 USB ports. All you need to do is connect the actual connectors to the headers, and presto, you have more usable USB ports. Using a PCI solution will just eat up another IRQ.
