Mozilla Thunderbird password problem

I made the switch to Firefox so I thought I'd give Thunderbird a try. I DL'ed it and installed it but can't get it to work. It always says the password sending did not succeed, bad password or username. I know I have it set up right. Anyone have this problem and or a solution? I've jacked with it all evening. My OE has no problems at all.

Never had a problem on Thunderbird... I have 2 SMTP and one IMAP server, one SMTP has password saved and the other two passwords I type, they work fine. Do you have a firewall that might be getting in the way? And which kind of server is this, do you have another server you could try?

Well, the built in firewall that comes with XP and Zonealarm on my 98 SE system. Doesn't work on either one and doesn't stop OE on either one. It's smtp.

Well, it does deal with outgoing vs incoming mail a little differently from OE, there's got to be something a little off kilter in the settings...

Note that you do have to set up POP3 and SMTP separately. Should have mentioned POP3 when I replied earlier.

I've been through the settings several times item by item. Don't see anything out of whack. My incoming server is a POP3 and outgoing is an SMTP and that's the way I have it set up.

No biggie, I can use OE just wanted to try Thunderbird.

if you create a *new* profile in OE, and add the given account *anew* and enter the password you're trying on thunderbird I'll bet you experience the same problem. try it.
