My HJT log [solved]

To any good samaritan who is willing to help me out:

I was looking in my add and remove programs and saw "home search assistent" and "shopping wizard". Not having a clue what they were, I did a search on google for them and the 2nd or 3rd result was Short-Media.

I have done all of the "pre post your log" criteria. Ad-aware, spybot S&D, HJT, about:_Buster. This is the latest HJT log or if you will "AfterMath HJT log":

Brother (or Sister), you appear to be well on the way to becoming a spyware removal expert. Your red stars demonstrate that you have a good sense of what is wrong.

By the way, welcome to Short Media.

First, you are several updates behind on your Windows/IE browser. Under the "Tools" icon of the IE toolbar, click "Windows Update" and install all "critial updates." After doing that (or if that fails), do the following:

As you have Home Search Assistant/Shopping Wizard, please start by following the directions here => http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18315

If you encounter any problems, or have any questions, feel free to post in this thread. Once you have completed the instructions, repost your HJT log and we will clean up any remaining problems.

Yeah, and then stick around because we could definitely use more people on the SVT SWAT team :D:thumbsup:

    Quick question:

Ever since I have ran Ad-aware, Spybot S&D and read some of the breif descriptions of the "bugs", I have been a bit anxious about things like passwords and login names and other private info that could have been napped by one of these buggers. I dont have a good idea of how long these uninvited pests were on my hard drive, but my question is:
What is the likelyhood that someone out there has some or all of my info? Im sure that this is hard to answer, but what Im most concerned about is stuff like SSN, CC#'s, Bank acc, and things that can hurt me $$$, or identity wise.

    Thanks again

I really don't think there's anything to worry about as far as those things are concerned. Spyware and adware are malicious because they compromise your bandwidth, your CPU, and your hard drive - they take away resources (that you paid for) from your computer and make it run slowly, differently, or not at all. So far I've never heard of any spyware that logs any information of that sort. Those kinds of things are usually done by the really bad trojans and worms.

    Vanagon40,

OK, so I went back and followed the instructions on the link. I had done them before with one exeption. I had not ran HSREMOVE.exe. So I did and low and behold both Home Search Assistent and Shopping Wizard are history(or atleast not on the add and remove programs list). I went ahead and followed the instructions for HJT one more time. This time I was a bit more brave and took out some RO, R1, R3, O2, O15, and O16 files. This was all done in SAFE MODE, and when I scaned it again right after, it confirmed what I had taken off. This was all fine and dandy until I hard booted again and started back up in normal mode. All of the files that I had removed in SAFE MODE are now back in the HJT log. Here are the results:

Just a side note, I did update IE just like you mentioned but it was after I ran HJT, so that is why it will be unchanged at the top of the log. Although i must say that under the IE help menu, and under about... the version has not changed much, it now states: version 6.0.2600.0000. I hope this is the latest version.

    * = Files that I feel are suspicious(haven't ruled out as benign) like some regular program that i know should be on my comp.
$ = Files that I removed in SAFE MODE but came back after the hard boot and restart in normal mode.

So, now that the preliminary work is done, can we try and get the "unwanted" permenently off my computer? Thanks a bunch Vanagon40.

Hope to hear from you soon.

You've still got the HSA problem there, so I suspect the bogus service was not disabled. Plesase follow the directions here:

    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=174924&postcount=2

Grab that file, run it, and post your list of active services for me. Please make sure to do this in NORMAL MODE. From that we should be able to determine your bogus service name, and we will try to stop it in Normal Mode instead of Safe Mode.

Well, having reviewed your active services via PM, I think you killed the service, so let's just clean the HJT entries and see what happens, maybe about:buster just missed them.

SAFE MODE -> HJT -> FIX:

Locate and quarantine the files in those entries. Reboot normally, check things out, and let me know :)

Ok, I think that it is all fixed....
I went into safe mode and removed all of the files that you said to remove, but unfortunatelly they were not removed... However, I went ahead and tried it in normal mode and they are now gone.... I hope that I didnt step over any red tape by doing it in normal mode, but the reality is that they are gone.
Oh, and another thing was that,
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [afqrclkrdj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\goqdvb.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fxvfhmp] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wpe.exe

Were not removing, but I went ahead and found them though the file path and put them in the Quarantine folder and changed the .exe to .xxx This helped because once it was in that folder, goqdvd.xxx was recognized as a "bug"(for lack of a better term) when I ran Ad-aware again. It was removed. I now dont get anymore popups and feel confident that my computer is clean. The only thing is with the McAfee On-Access Scan being disabled everytime I boot up. Bothersome but not critical, Ill just enable it everytime manually.(That is unless anyone feels that this is a critical issue)
