Wireless vs Access Point

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
I have two computers connected to a wired router (DI-604) and everything is and has been running smoothly for over a year...I now have a laptop with a wireless card and I tried hooking everything up to a wirless router (DI-624) but to no avail, even the tech support guys at DLink couldn't help and after four hours on the phone they actually gave up!! :-( Now, someone suggested to me to take the wireless router back and get an AccessPoint and hook it up to my wired router. I read about an AccessPoint and it seems that this may be the solution. Before I go and buy something else that may not work does anyone have any feedback on this? It would be greatly appreciated. :-) Thanks

The 624 is an excellent router. Have you got the latest firmware on it? What country are you in? (Some countries run diff firmware) It should work well. I run one with different make wifi cards and also have tested it as a repeater. What are the makes/models of your other wifi cards? What OS are you running? A little more info please and we may have some ideas...

Yes, I downloaded the latest firmware (suggested by the tech from DLink) I'm in the United States and my DLink (wired) 604 works fine. My OS is XP and my laptop has an Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps) and the 624 is one of the routers that Dell was offering with this laptop. The tech guys at DLink said the router was working because it was getting the IP address from my computer...he said there was something else getting in the way. I do not have a wireless card in my primary computer (if that matters I don't know). I have my 624 all packed and ready to send back but I'd rather just keep what I have (if it'll work) than to try something else that may not work!! Thanks for your help!! :)

Could you describe in detail what went wrong... I know it's not easy to provide details but it sounds like either a too-simple problem or a defective product and we're really groping in the dark without as much info as you can provide.

Ok....I have been using a wired router (DI-604) for over a year and with no problems whatsoever. I have the primary computer (front room) and secondary computer (bedroom) hooked up to the router. I got a laptop and it has a wireless (internel) card so I purchased a wireless router (DI-624) I unhooked my wired router and hooked my wireless router up (I am on cable) I followed the instructions step by step trying all the different options! After much frustration I called "DLink tech support" and was on the phone for four hours, they kept putting "other" techs on the phone because no one could figure out what was wrong. Everytime when all was said and done I'd get "this page cannot be displayed" so I hooked my wired router back up and everything worked fine except I can't get my laptop online (of course) :banghead: . I'm on the brink of sending it back and purchasing an AccessPoint which I'm not familar with at all....only going on a suggestion from someone else!! I would much rather keep my wireless router. If there is anything else you need to know that I may have left out just holler!! Thank you :)

Okay, so what did you go through with tech support?

Could you configure the router via web configuration from the wired computer? Could you do the same with the wireless laptop?

If so, did it get an IP address from your ISP's DHCP servers?

Unfortunately I have to get packing so I won't be back on S-M probably till Sunday or even later, but I hope that's a good jumping off point.
