HELP... i cannot boot because of something with system32

edited August 2004 in Hardware
I cannot boot up because this system 32 file is missing
it is ntoskrnl (.exe)
i have windows xp
i have the oem preinstallation kit
i get up to the black screen where it says windows didn't shut down properly and it gives u a bunch of options...safe mode doesn't work...neither does last known good configuration... after i try any of the options it says
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file"
what should i do???

Boot off your Windows XP CD and use the recovery console.

    At the recovery console type:

    cd c:\windows\system32

    copy "..\driver cache\i386\ntoskrnl.exe"

It may prompt you to overwrite. Yes overwrite it ;)

That will get you back up and running :)

Additionally.. if it says that system is missing (after you have rebooted from the above).. then follow this excellent guide :)
