More Home Search Assistent help

I am trying to remove Home Search Assistent, Search Extender and Shopping Wizard which I think are the reason I can't even open Internet Explorer. I am using Netscape's browser. I have read the guide to removal, but am not sure which are my bad files. Can anyone help? Here is my Hijackthis log: Thanks so much!

    Welcome to Short Media :)

    Your problem entries are:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\ohmjd.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\ohmjd.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\ohmjd.dll/sp.html#37049

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DECF1D07-C151-2ECB-735C-CF27FE86D30B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ievf32.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msjq.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjq.exe

You also have another program running:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe

That is Download Accelerator, which is known to have an adware component. Disable this entry as well, and add it to your quarantine list. Try to uninstall Download Accelerator through your Add/Remove Programs control panel as well.

Return to the removal guide, try those, make sure to identify the bogus service, and you should be able to defeat this thing. :)

    Dexter,
Thanks for your quick response. I followed every step in the removal guide but in Step 11 the first string...HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControl\Set\Services\...ended there, so I didn't delete that line. I did delete the second string. I couldn't find Download Accelerator in the Control Panel. Anyway, the problem still exists. Any further suggestions? Here is the current HJT log:

    Thanks!

What service did you locate in step 6?

Go to the second post in the removal guide thread, download the app there, and follow the instuctions to generate an active services report. Post it here, preferably as an attachment, or as a copy and paste if you can't find the attachments manager.

    Dexter...
  • edited August 2004
In Step 6 I didn't have Network Security Service, but there was one called NTLM Security Support so I set to disable. I also didn't have Workstation NetLogon Service but had one called just Workstation and I disabled it also.
I downloaded the file you specified and allowed Norton AV to open it, but I couldn't. I got a message that said the system cannot find the file. Now what? I feel so depressed about this! Did you notice in the last HJT file above there are new (re-named?) files? Please help when you have time. Thanks so much.

I think you guessed wrong. Both of those are legit services. Please re-enable them.

    Then, click here: http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=174924&postcount=2

Grab that file, run it, and post your list of active services for me. Please make sure to do this in NORMAL MODE. From that we should be able to determine your bogus service name, and we will try to stop it in Normal Mode instead of Safe Mode.

    Dexter...
  • edited August 2004
Ok, I re-enabled them (set them on automatic). But, when I try to open "get active services" I still get an error message popping up in a window titled Window Script Host that says The system cannot find the file specified.
What can you suggest for this? Thanks again.

    edited August 2004
I have not seen that error before. But that's okay, there's another to way to get what we are after. I'll get you to send me a Startup Log from Hijack This, in Normal Mode.

run HJT. Click on Config -> Misc Tools. Check off the 2 options under the button that says "Generate StartupList Log", then click the button itself. Generate that log, save it as a text file, then post the text file here, preferably as a file attachment, or just paste the text in if you can't figure the attachments out. The startuplistlog also shows services, so I should be able to ID it from there.

Those are part of the Download Accelerator program. As recommended in my first post in this thread, you need to uninstall that from your Add/Remove Programs control panel, it is know to contain adware. These services should be removed by the uninstaller, if not, come back to the services.msc control panel and stop/disable them.

    Dexter,
I completed all the steps as you recommended and after re-starting it worked fine for a while. I went to several different websites with no re-directs...and I thought I had it licked. Then home search began coming up! It was late and I was tired so I stopped working on it last night. When I have time later today or tomorrow I thought I would go through the entire process again. I will keep you posted here. Thanks again for your help.

    Dexter,
I just went through the complete hsa removal procedure again and it is still with me. Help! When I open IE my home page is changed to about:blank and I am getting pop ups including Only The Best, and my home page goes to Home Search. Here is my current HJT log. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

PS. When I search my C drive I can't locate the "bad" files including c:\windows\system32\hbqbp.dll/sp or c:\windows\system32\msjq.exe

Also when I turned the computer back on after finishing the procedure I had an error pop up saying it couldn't locate c:\windows\system32\netrp.exe. Do you know what that is? Many thanks.

Sorry to take so long to reply, busy weekend here :)

If you cannot locate the files, make sure you are set to view hidden files and folders as per these instructions:

    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172588&postcount=3

The netrp.exe is probably a past random version of the installer.

Please post a new active services list for me to check.

    Dexter,
I think I beat this thing! After following all steps in your HSA removal guide a couple more times (last time I disconnected my cable modem) it seems to be gone. One thing though, I have two identities on this computer and when I log on under the other one, it is still there. So I guess I have to go through the whole procedure under that one as well, right?

Per your request attached is a new active services list. Does everything look okay? Thanks again.

That services log looks clean :)

Yes, you may have to run the procedure again for the other profile, unfortunately, but now you should be an HSA-hunting pro ;) Let me know if you need help with that one. I'll mark this thread closed, start another if you run into trouble with the other profile.

Stick around the site, lots of great tech knowledge here, lots of fun threads in our Pub forum, and please click the links in my signature to find out about our involvement with the Folding For A Cure project. :)
