Please Help!...been Hijacked!

First,

Thanks for the forum and taking time to help us poor infected individuals!

I have been recently Hijacked by "ad105.com" and it has changed my home page for Internet Explorer. I also have a variety of other problems:

1. Low system resources error message when I attempt to close a running program.

2. Cannot find Notepad or won't let me open it.

I have run an updated copy of SpyBot and Ad-Ware and have removed everything they found. I have attempted to save the "HiJack This" file to notepad, but cannot. I will attempt to post it from Microsoft word.

Thanks for your help!
Big_Al

Welcome to Short-Media. Sorry to take a while to get to you, busy weekend here at home... :)

Not being able to find notepad is sometimes an indicator of a virus. However, it is also an indicator of some spyware/adware problems, such as CoolWebSearch. They do this just to make it harder for you to post a HJT log for assistance.

Make sure to update your virus definitions, then run a full scan in SAFE MODE later (I'll tell you when....)

You can re-install notepad from your Win 98 CD, or download a copy online.

I want you to download "CWShredder" from here:
    http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml

Put it in it's own directory just like you did for HJT.

As for your log...first of all, please make sure that HijackThis.exe is in its own folder (eg: c:\hijackthis or C:\HJT). When you use HijackThis to remove unwanted items, it creates backup files. If you ever mistakenly remove an item that you later discover you need, you can recover these items from the backup file. Having HijackThis.exe in its own folder gives these backup files a safe place to reside, and reduces clutter on your Desktop or My Documents folder.

Reboot in SAFE MODE, run HJT, and FIX:

Stay in safe mode, locate the exe and dll files in those entries above, and quarantine them.

Stay in safe mode, and run CWShredder. Then run that virus scan in safe mode as well.

Reboot normally, check things out, let us know, and post a fresh log for review.

    Thanks Dexter,

Seems to have done the trick. All that remains now is to reload my Notepad.exe file. Found a Notepad.exe.bak in my C:\System folder.

    Thanks for your help.

Here is the HJT updated file

    Looks a lot better!

I have added a post here on the forum with Notepad in a Zip archive:
