Can't pass Memtest86+, what's the problem?

My Setup:

MSI K8t Master2-FAR
2 x AMD Opteron 248
2GB of TwinX1024RE-3200LLPT (4 x 512MB)
2 x 80GB WD800JB (RAID Striping Array using VIA chipset on mobo)
1 x 80GB WD800JB (compressed backup drive)
Sapphire Radeon 9700 128MB
WinXP SP1 and all critical updates

The Symptoms:

Cannot zip large (say 1GB+) files w/o getting a crc corruption error when I unzip them

Cannot run memtest86+ - it hangs at 50% of Test 2.

********

I've tried increasing the DDR voltage to 2.65 in the BIOS (Award v1.1) and I have tried reinstalling WinXP to no avail.

Anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot this? This nagging issue has reduced my confidence workstation to the point where I only use it for email & web these days. I could dig my old powerbook out of the closet and it would be equivalent...

Thanks!!!

Maybe the memory is bad... run memtest with one stick at a time....

This was my idea also - one big question though...

is it possible for bad memory to crash memtest86+?

I get to Test 2 @ 50% and memtest86+ just hangs... I can't stop the test or kill the program, I have restart to get back control... is this normal?

As Prime has already said but set BIOS to safe defaults and test with only one stick in at a time. Physically pull the rest. Yes...it's a slow way but one of the only ways to really properly diagnose.

You may have to take the extra step if all memory clears to try two at a time.
