What to do with a SCSI hard drive?

I've got a 50GB Seagate Barracuda ST150176LC that spins up but won't "start" according to my SCSI controller, an Adaptec 2940U2W. The device sends a sense code of 00h 04h, which corresponds to "Logical Unit Not Ready, Cause Not Reportable" according to Seagate.

Is there anything I can do in the way of jumper settings, software/firmware hacks, or sound thumps that can make this drive usable?

You can jumper it to spin up on its own but a drive not ready is normally a death song. I have like 3 sitting around me on shelves at the moment. Check teh warranty though as even though those are older I had a buddy just get two replaced from Seagate also.

Yeah, usually SCSI drives have at least a three year warranty. I bet you they'd take it on RMA and then you'll get a new one :D

Unfortunately, Seagate says it has an "OEM Warranty Only" so they won't touch it. :thumbsdow Got it second hand so I don't think I'll be getting warranty service through them. Goodwill time I suppose.

I had a problem with a IBM SCSI drive at work that wouldn't "start" according to the Adaptec controller. I brought my el-cheapo Qlogic controller from home and plugged it in and it worked fine for a little while - long enough for me to get my data off of it. So if you have data in need of rescueing, try it on another controller to see if it'll work.

Its not just the adpatec but they may time out faster when waiting for teh drive to respond naybe? When you FIRST get this you can sometimes try over and over if its important and it will maybe pop up for a few times.

I use 2940's for tape drives and cdroms but for a harddisk I prefer a LSI controller myself.
