spyware seems to be in the way of network authentication

I'm trying to help out a friend here who can't get on our network I think because spyware is screwing everything up. We use this piece of software called perfigo smartenforcer to enforce network requirements as far as anti-virus software and security updates. It isn't installing properly, and I know this machine had a lot of the typical spyware, so I want to get that cleaned up and see if the bigger problem goes away.

I've run adaware and spybot and fixed all errors, IEplugin was not fixed by spybot, so I definitely need to get that one nuked.

Thanks

I'll skip the standard Welcome greeting for you .... ;)

You definitely have some issues there...If you are not sure how to do some of the things I tell you, check the links I provide for instructions.

Please make sure that HijackThis.exe is in its own folder, as explained here.

Set your system to Show Hidden Files and folders.

For Windows XP or ME, Disable System Restore.

    Reboot into Safe Mode.

Run Hijack This. FIX THE FOLLOWING:

(Those are all HOSTS blocks entries designed to stop the computer from being able to access sites where people can get help. SM is not in that list...yet. If you want to fight back, use a HOSTS list that stops crapware sites: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Explanation and download there. Also add hosts blocks from Spybot, in the Tools menu, then lock the HOSTS file. That can be undone by some spyware, but it's better then nothing.)

Stay in Safe mode, manually locate the exe and dll files in the entries above, and quarantine them. Also,go into your Windows folder, locate your Downloaded Program Files folder and clean out everything inside it.

Reboot normally, check things out, let us know how it turned out. Post a fresh HJT log for review. If things looks clean, re-enable your system restore and set a new restore point.

    Negative!!!

Spyware, adware, malware, crapware can ALWAYS be removed. It takes just as long or even longer to back up all the personal data and reinstall Windows as it does to do a removal. In most cases a removal can be done in less than an half an hour....you would spend as much time formatting an 80 GB hard drive. Just take a look at all the checkmarks in the forum listing here to see how many problems get solved in here. And most of the un-checkmarked ones are just because people did not have the courtesy to come back and tell us that everything was ok.
