ABIT leads the way with Secure IDE technology

ABIT recently announced its latest motherboard, the IC7-MAX3 which along with the usual array of features has the added bonus of being the first ABIT mainboard to utilise Secure IDE technology.
In a nutshell, a special intergrated chip blocks the reading of the HDD, unless a special security key is installed.
Even if the drive is removed from the PC and plugged into another terminal, it is still secured without the key.
This type of technology is hardly groundbreaking, but what makes it special is that it is the first time we've seen it, at a mainstream consumer level.
Currently the Secure IDE technology is only available on the IC7-MAX3 P4 based board, but an AMD equivalent MAX3 mainboard is expected to be available later in the year.
An interesting new feature, yes! a proven security tool over that of general convience, no, at least not yet. Only time will tell I guess.
