It started pre loading a while ago.

    Close and restart steam.

I'll have to try it when the servers aren't busy.

I just retried a couple of times.

But i am in the UK so the servers are usually less clogged.

Thats neat! I dont remember anything about HL2 going gold. Has it yet?

Nevertheless, Im still stoked about it. I have to say I think its going to be better than Doom3. I didnt think so before, but now that I have completed Doom3 I wished there was more scenery in it. The same old dark cramped claustrophobic corridores grew tiresome tward the end.

    Excuse my spelling.

    Has not gone gold yet.

But the rumours are pointing to a mid september release.

I'll agree with Gnome. Why are we downloading HL2 through steam?

cause that's how you get it if you have the ATI coupon
  • edited August 2004
And if you wish to purchase the game off steam.

Just to be clear, the cache is 500MB compressed on the wire, which is the number we track closest as it's the amount of data that will be moved across your internet connection.

Uncompressed, the files in this preload are around 1GB. For Half-Life 2 to run, they have to be in this state. The first preload event contains most of the textures that Half-Life 2 needs to run.

This is the first of a number of preload events. We'll be adding more data to the preload over the next couple of weeks.

...Will I be able to buy it in the store instead of paying for something I'll never actually have a physical copy of?

yes, if you plan on buying a retail copy, don't bother with the preload, Rob.

Groovy. Good to know my ATI voucher is useless though. I don't like paying for things I'll never have a material copy of, you know? Steam could close down at any time.

If you have an ATI voucher you get HL2 free off steam.

    OOops :O

Well if valve closed down it would just go piracy mad anyway.

Yes, and there would be nowhere to authenticate servers with.

If you want to sell your ATI voucher I'd be more than willing to take it off your hands thraxy :). I need 4 copies of HL2 at my house (already got 1 ATI coupon) and only plan on buying 1 physical copy.

i'll download it... just not through steam. i'm sure this preload crap will be cracked before the game hits store shelves.
  • edited August 2004
i think that you can choose to either down load it or have ati send a copy of the game to you.... don't quote me on it though...
  • edited August 2004
You will download it but not through steam?

So you're going to pirate it :|

Yes you can get ATI to send you a copy but i think it takes nearrly 4 weeks for it to make it's way back to you.

If valve and steam went do i would imagine vivendi would take over the server or valve would just unlock the game.

Well pirating sucks simple as that.

They make software to put food on the table and keep jobs and you want to steal that from them?

I've always wondered (well, since I understood what 'preload meant, which I learned today :p) why they bothered, as it would be cracked right away anyhow... And when the final release comes out, do they just send the decryption key or something...? How does that work?

    Another update.

The second phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account holders today.

This will allow users to download the majority of the audio of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away.
