edited September 2004 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Please help a computer dinosaur, an engineer who did Fortran programming on machines that filled rooms but is lost with Windows XP. I have done as much as I can to fight the bugs and have follwed the instruction in your excellent articles. I know I still have some problems. Thanks in advance for your help & advice. Here is my HJT log:

Those microsoft entries are good, that means that your IE defaults "stuck" - those pages are all Internet Explorer defaults, so that's okay, but you still have some crap in there.

Okay, we need to manually delete some files. Get rid of these entries first:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [[Ephemeral 2.5] by TreeHugger, ] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\38.tmp.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsockdriver] winsock2.2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SYSTEM] lsas.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Machine] wuamgrd.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SYSTEM] lsas.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Machine] wuamgrd.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SYSTEM] lsas.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Machine] wuamgrd.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [winsockdriver] winsock2.2.exe

Then before you reboot, we need to manually delete these files. Boot into safe mode, and then check your running processes (ctrl-alt-delete to get to task manager). If any of those processes that I just listed are still running, end them, and then manually search for and delete these files:

    winsock2.2.exe
    wuamgrd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\38.tmp.exe
    lsas.exe

If you don't or can't delete all four of those, your hijack will come right back.

Please try to delete those and then report back here.

Whew, I think this is bad. I was able to go to safe mode only using the F8 key when rebooting. Then when I tried to enter Task Manager, the window appears and then quickly disappears before I can do anything with it?

Took care of the Task Manager problem & a few other things but am still having problems getting rid of 38.tmp.exe so here is a copy of the HJT log. Will be away for the weekend. This is the start of Octoberfest type activities here. Will check back on Monday.

Try this program to delete it:

    Killbox

Unzip to it's own directory, run, navigate to the file you want to delete, and press the red X button. If it cannot be deleted "live", use the option to delete on reboot, and press the X again. The file will be flagged for deletion on reboot. Reboot and see if it is gone.

Let us know if that helps.

After working on this over the past 2 days doing some things in safe mode and cleaning up the registry I think I've finally got it whipped. It would be appreciated if someone would confirm that my HJT log now looks clean -
