Please review this log

Hello,

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would review my log for me.

Over the last week, my computer has been locking/freezing up and I can't figure out why. The mouse will still move, but the pointer becomes an hour glass and I cannot click on anything. To me it seems like it is trying to run something, but it doesn't do anything. I ran Norton and TrendMicro and everything came up clean. I ran AdAware and Spyware Blaster and got rid of what they found. This morning, my computer locked/froze right after start-up and when I tried to force restart, it said "ending apphelp1.exe" and then "ending explorer.exe". Any ideas?

    Welcome to Short Media forums.

Before doing the following, please Set your computer to show hidden files and folders, Disable System Restore, and Reboot in Safe Mode.

Once you have done that, Run HijackThis and have it fix the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [edd4483cc842] C:\WINDOWS\System32\apphelp1.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MaxSpeed - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe

Then find and locate the files listed above and Quarentine Them.

Once you have done that, reboot, scan with HiijackThis again, and post a new log.

You could not find those files because there were no files to find. These were files that Ad Aware or Spybot removed, but they left the registry entries behind. So don't worry about those.

However, you still have a couple of problems:

SAFE MODE -> HJT -> Fix

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bakra] C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEHost.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pcsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe

Also, fix all the 016 DPF entries, you have a lot of stuff in there, and anything important can be easily re-downloaded on demand if yuo need it later.

Quarantine the files in the entries above. Also, go into your Windows folder, open your Downloaded Programs folder, and delete everything in there as well.

Reboot normally, check things out, and come back to let us know how it turned out. Post a fresh HJT log for review. If things looks clean, re-enable your system restore and set a new restore point.

Nope, there's still a nasty in there:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\a3d44643.exe

Try killing the process (CTRL-ALT-DEL --> Task Manager) and going to the PROCESSES tab, and then clicking on a3d44643.exe and clicking END PROCESS

Then immediately delete that file while the process is dead. Then BEFORE YOU REBOOT, post a new HJT log and wait for a response.

    It looks clean :D

Now, reboot it, then surf the web for a second with Internet Explorer, and then post one more log to see if anything respawned.

    Still looks good :)

Please read our article on Defeating Spyware for tips on how to improve your Internet Explorer security, or to learn how to switch to a different browser. For more general information about spyware read this page.

If you are running Windows XP, and have not yet upgraded to Service Pack 2, please do so, especially if you plan to stay on Internet Explorer. SP2 introduces some security features to help protect you from unwanted downloads in Internet Explorer. Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2 here, courtesy of Short-Media's downloads section.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please take the time to find out more about Folding For a Cure, a good cause by which your computer uses it's spare power to help search for cures to diseases. We would love to have you on our Team.
