xlime, xadso, xadsq (from Molecularrr)

Hi,

First let me say that this website is terrific. I'm very glad to see that so many kind people are dedicated to helping others (like me) who find themselves in the clutches of malicious software.

I seem to be having a common problem with pop-up windows opening things through xadso.offeroptimzer, etc. (and other variants). It seems to be getting worse, and every now and then, new little bugs show up. Now, Spybot S&D is alerting me every 3 minutes or so that something is trying to change registry values. It says something about the new value being czfcmcoe.exe (it's stopped for the moment--isn't that typical? when you finally ask for help it won't make the weird noise).

I've updated and run Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder, and a couple others, and I've had success with removing everything but this xadso thing (and/or whatever is changing the values).

I realize lots of people have posted this same problem, but I'm afraid that they might have a similar (though not identical problem) and I might accidentally do something harmful with HijackThis.

So here's my HijackThis log. Please help, if possible. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Short-Media. If you are not sure how to do some of the things I tell you, check the links I provide for instructions.

These Xlime/xadso hijacks are showing up a lot these days, but as you can see from some of the checkmarks in the forum listing, they can be defeated. :)

Please make sure that HijackThis.exe is in its own folder, as explained here.

Set your system to Show Hidden Files and folders.

For Windows XP or ME, Disable System Restore.

    Reboot into Safe Mode.

Run Hijack This. FIX THE FOLLOWING:

    **************

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://education.dellnet.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - (no file)

    N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Zach\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\1w1afa8n.slt\prefs.js)

(We're just going to chuck them all out, you can reset them manually later.)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

(Weatherbug contains adware. I recommend you uninstall it.)

(We are also going to throw out all of your 016 DPF's. Anything you need will be quickly downloaded again the next time you visit a particular site, such as Windows Update. After ceaning these out, go to your Windows Folder, find the Downloaded Progarm Files folder, open it, and make sure it is empty, delete anything in it.)

    **************

Stay in Safe mode, manually locate the exe and dll files in the entries above, and quarantine them.

Reboot normally, check things out, and come back to let us know how it turned out. Post a fresh HJT log for review. If things looks clean, re-enable your system restore and set a new restore point.

When we are finished cleaning your system, please read our article on Defeating Spyware for tips on how to improve your Internet Explorer security, or to learn how to switch to a different browser. For more general information about spyware read this page.

    Hello again.

Thanks so much for the assistance. The pop-ups seem to have stopped (for now), but Ad-Aware found something trying to hijack my browser (I didn't let Ad-Aware fix it because I still have System Restore disabled). This is its log report for the thing it found:

    Started deep registry scan
    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
    Possible browser hijack attempt : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MainStart Pageabout:blank

Possible Browser Hijack attempt Object recognized!

    Rootkey : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Object : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
    Value : Start Page

That may not be anything important. But anyway, here's my new HT log:

    That looks pretty good. :)

Let Ad Aware fix that entry. If it cannot, we can also tell you how to fix it manually. Come back and let us know if the problem is entirely solved.

Once you have done that, re-enable your system restore and set a new restore point.

Please read our article on Defeating Spyware for tips on how to improve your Internet Explorer security, or to learn how to switch to a different browser. For more general information about spyware read this page.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please take the time to find out more about Folding For a Cure, a good cause by which your computer uses it's spare power to help search for cures to diseases. We would love to have you on our Team.

Yeah I rebooted and rescanned and everything looks clean. I can't thank you guys enough. I mean, I was literally having nightmares about this thing. I guess I really felt violated--someone or something was making my computer do things that I didn't want it to do.

<Insert lots of smiley faces doing something cool here.>

I don't know how to put the checkmark on my post, but my problem has been resolved.

    Thanks.

You are very welcome. The best way to thank us to install Folding at Home on your computer and fold for Team 93. Then you get to do something good with your computer and have pleasant dreams about curing diseases instead. :)

Oh, and we get to put the checkmarks by the threads to mark it resolved. It's the fun part of what we do here. :D
