    hi,
I think I have done everything correctly, but I can't seemto copy the log onto anything other than my own file. I need advice on how to copy it to this forum. Guess I'm a rank beginner here. Please assume I know nothing ... sorry!

After you have a file, open the file in notepad, and then cut and paste it into a post here.

OKay, you have Home Search Assistant. It is a bad hijack that cannot be removed using HijackThis alone. Dexter wrote a wonderful guide that will, if followed step-by-step, help you remove HSA. But you have to follow it carefully or otherwise HSA will come right back.

Give the guide a shot, and report back to us here.

I tried the cure recommended. Do you think it worked? so far, no pop-ups... but I wanted to check with you to be sure I didn't delete anything important.
what about my settings? hidden files and system restore? do I re-enable them? Thank you very much for your help. I'll try to educate myself.

I still have it! I tried Explorer instead of my Google shortcut like last time ... and instant popups. They're kind of ironic in that when I try to find your website, i get ads for ad- and spy-ware busters. I know I need to go through the process again, but will await your verdict. Please help me identify exactly which files to delete ... so I don't blow it next time. This is very time consuming! Definitely not what I'm used to. Anyway, thanks again for your help. I intend to leave my computer on until you reply, so that these files don't rename themselves again.

Ok, you need to refer to Post #2 of the HSA Removal Guide to generate a log file of your active services, and post it here. You probably still have a bogus service running, and until you disable it, this thing will not go away.

At the same time, generate a new HJT log and post it, then DO NOT REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL WE GIVE YOU FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. Rebooting will cause the names to all change.

trying to follow the protocol from the beginning ... i ran adaware and spybot s&d, plus I updated my norton systemworks. But, that required that I restart my computer. So, I ran HJT again and here is the log. I will leave my computer on, and will go through the whole process again. This may take until tomorrow, but I will not shut down my computer again until I try it all and hear from you. Mahalo!

We still need a services log according to post #2 that dexter linked to. Showing us that service log is the only way we'll be able to get the name of the bad thing that is ruining your day :)

    aloha,

I am trying to send you an "active Services" log, but I cannot open my "get active services" .... it apparently ran, but I have some kind of block against opening it. I can't seem to copy the whole file to this formum either. Any advice?... when I try to open it, I get a security warning, which gives me two choices: open, or cancel. But when I click Open, I get an error message from the Windows Script Host .... and the only thing I can do is click OK. Then I'm back where I started.

Anyway I ran HJT again because i had to hard reboot again as part of the fix ... so here's the latest log. I have also, after rereading the #2 directions, included the startuplist log from HjT. Since I couldn't start active processes, maybe this will help.

I've been browsing your website ... when this is over I will try to "spyproof" my computer. One question - I can see that I didn't get rid of my spyware ... but I deleted a lot of things! How can I tell if I have eliminated some necessary program? ... and if I have, what can I do?

it's a beautiful morning here ... hope yours is too.

    Let's try this:

First, make sure you can view hidden files and folders.

If you haven't rebooted the computer since you posted that, then just PULL the power cord out.

When you turn it back on, go into SAFE MODE.

Then, go into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ and delete these files:

    tinpw.dll
    javasa32.dll

You might want to sort the view by "file type" - go to the DLLs and if you see any other files that look suspicious (5 random letters.dll, like tinpw.dll and dbsfs.dll) from all around the same date range, that are the same exact size as tinpw.dll, then delete them all, they are the problem files.

Then, while still in safe mode, re-run HJT and delete these entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {34381BFC-FA69-0FBF-CC17-5108220905AB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javasa32.dll

After THAT, reboot, and post a new log. :)

    aloha,

followed directions, but did not see"tinpw.dll" in the system 32 .dll folders. I did find and delete "Javasa32.dll". It was 90.6KB, so I tried looking through all the .dll files with 5 nonsense letters, but none were that size.

When I saw the Hijack this scan, there were tinpw.dll entries, so I don't know whether I've gotten rid of this bugga or not... anyway, here's the new HJT log -

Sorry! They are in the C:\WINDOWS folder ... My bad!

Do that again, but go into C:\WINDOWS and look for files that match that pattern (forget the 90.6K size - that was something different)

We are getting close, judy! :D

    aloha,

well, I went back in (in safe mode) and found tinpw.dll in the windows folder, and deleted it ... ran hijack this & deleted all the bad files ... rebooted, ran hjt again, and guess what? tinpw.dll came back! at least in the log ... so now what? here's the log ... it's quite frustrating. I sure appreciate your patience with this (and me), and hope they pay you very well at your job - you deserve it.

I actually had a chance to sit down with a real computer that had this problem tonight, and I was able to gain a lot of insight and create a new removal method.

This is tricky, but I know you can follow along.

First open a window with C:\WINDOWS in it. Then open another window with the same thing, C:\WINDOWS visible in it.

You should have both windows on screen, and everything else closed (internet explorer especially).

Make sure hidden files and folders are viewable.

Scroll down to the part in each window where you can see the problem files. Namely:

    C:\WINDOWS\apirs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYMINST.LOG
    C:\WINDOWS\javauc.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll

in the windows folder (if you have to open up a seperate window for each file, so be it).

Now, open up the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and go to the processes tab.

    One at a time:

Right click on the C:\WINDOWS\apirs.exe process, and select "END PROCESS TREE". It will give you a warning. Say yes.

as soon as you do that, go into the window where you can see that file and DELETE IT

    Next,
C:\WINDOWS\SYMINST.LOG:sjzrq. Same thing, right click --> END PROCESS TREE. Go ti SYMINST.LOG and delete it.

Now, delete the other two files (tinpw and javauc).

Now, this part was a bit tricky for me. I may not have done it fast enough, or maybe I haven't perfected the method yet, but a NEW PROCESS spawned when I did something. This MAY happen to you. You'll have to use some logic, and watch the processes list. If it "grows" by one, and a new process starts all of the sudden, you'll have to end the tree and find and quickly delete that file.

Once all the bad processes are stopped and all those files are deleted, then remove these entries in HJT:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\tinpw.dll/sp.html#37049
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FC5F4FD2-9814-9658-709F-821EB79F97AB} - C:\WINDOWS\javauc.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apirs.exe] C:\WINDOWS\apirs.exe

Once those are removed, check the processes one more time to see if anything got spawned again.

Now, I did a HARD shutdown - pulled the power plug instead of the proper (start--> shut down).

When I plugged back in and booted - the problem was gone.

    Give it a shot :)

    aloha ,
am I supposed to be in safe mode or regular mode?
    and...
If the "new process" starts growing, how do I end the tree? tell me exactly what to do because I have always been a bit short of logic.
Remember, I am only half a step above computer illiterate.
    Mahalo ....

another question. This may sound disingenuous, but how can I tell that a new process is spawning?

Watch the task list. Look at the number of processes. If it is 23 for example, and suddenly it jumps to 24, you'll have to look at the list. If the process is something like "ydjje.exe" or "gwwef.exe" you'll know something is up.

Remember, these are all randomly named every time. They fit a pattern.

    aloha,

well, I tried your new fix ... and thought it worked, but suddenly had a new popup ... the one i hate the most, too. So I went back over your protocol, but ran HJT first to see if I could get a clue as to which file to delete. And I think I found it ... deleted same, and ran my latest HJT log. here it is:

    Wow. Incredible.

    Kill these processes:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntcs32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\twunk_32.exe:ygtfd
    C:\WINDOWS\twunk_32.exe:ygtfd
    C:\WINDOWS\twunk_32.exe:ygtfd

(use the end process tree method)

Then find and delete C:\WINDOWS\twunk_32.exe, C:\WINDOWS\ieru.dll, and C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntcs32.ex

Then, kill these entries in HJT:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D4830DD3-9ABD-EA24-ED6B-4C012094FCAD} - C:\WINDOWS\ieru.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntcs32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntcs32.exe

    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

Then, before you reboot, close HJT, and then open it again, and check the process list to see if there's anything weird in there again. DON'T OPEN INTERNET EXPLORER DURING THIS STEP, like to post a new log or something. In fact, if this keeps going on, I'm going to suggest that you download a different browser just to post logs until we can kill this thing.

So, to reiterate: End process trees, delete files, remove entries, close all, re-run HJT, look for more weirdness, delete them if there are any, and only when HJT is clean, reboot and post a new log. :eek2:

    aloha,

ok, I deleted twunk_32.exe, and I assume the ygtfd files under it ... I couldn't delete ieru.dll, because the message said it may be write-protected, so I sent it to Quarantine and changed it to .ddd ...there did not seem to be an ntcs32.exe, but there was an ntfw32.exe. Ran hjt, deleted all, ran it again, and some were back. I found them in C:windows and deleted them. rebooted. Here is the result - looking better! I think. What do you think?
