Can someone help with a home network problem?

edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
I'm trying to home network a winxp and win98 machine using the factory cards. Intel pro100 in the xp and davicom in the 98. I got both cards setup but I get the error on the xp machine that the cable is unplugged, which it's not, I have both computers directly connected by one cable. That should work right? Any ideas about this error? I've gone through the process a dozen times. Seems that if both cards are recognized on their respective computers there is not much, hardware speaking, that could fail right?
Thanks and have a great weekend

Do you have a crossover cable, or are you using a regular patch/straight through cable? You need to use the former.

I have a cossover cable, but I'm not sure if I have the properties set correctly. Can I use TCP/IP without a hub?

Double check the cable. If WinXP isn't even saying you're connected, there may be an issue.

I gave up on the direct link and bought a router, the winxp can see the 98 machnine but I cannot to save my life get the 98 machine to see anything. Can someone please walk me through the setting necessary? Do I have to assign an address to this machine? Where do I get that address? Etc.
    Thanks :mean:

The router should assign IPs automatically to each machine, as long as you tell each machine to "assign IP automatically".

You have to make sure they are in the same workgroup.

First, find out the IP of each machine and then we can help you diagnose the problem.

To find out the IP, go to a command prompt (Start --> Run --> type "command" on the 98 box) (start-->run--> type "cmd" on the XP box)

Then at the command prompt type "IPCONFIG /ALL"

That will tell you the address of each one.

Find out, and post them here.

i have gone through this a hundred times, checking the workgroup name, tcp/ip settings etc. i see the ip addresses that were automatically assigned by the router. where should these be entered in network settings? (correction, i see it on the 98 machine, the command "ipconfig/all" get an error on xp "is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file")

There is a space after the ipconfig part.

    IPCONFIG /ALL

You don't enter the addresses anywhere - they are ASSIGNED by the router.

i thought they were assigned, but heck, i've tried everything else, i thought maybe i could stick them somewhere and get this working. for some reason anything i type at the command prompt gets the same error message as i stated before. i think i have this network problem narrowed down to the xp machine as i am able to ping from the 98 pc everything except what i'm guessing is the xp's ip address, as listed on the belkin website. i wish i had some way to find it out for sure, as you say, at the command prompt, but that ain't working. however, when i try to assign sharing to a folder on the xp machine i get an error message that the Server Service is not started. any ideas on that one? i'm stumped.

Okay, so if you go to the cmd prompt on the windows XP box and type:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

    you get nothing?

    How about just IPCONFIG

yeah, i get the same message no matter how i type it, and regardles of whether i'm at the c: prompt or any directory. can't figure it out. but i did figure out my network problems. several in fact. the Server Service, even though it was set to automatic it kept disabling until i rebooted. also sp2 firewall kept enabling until i rebooted, and i ran system file checker on the 98 machine and found a file that had been changed so i reinstalled it and rebooted it again (for the 1000th time. now i'm left with the command prompt puzzle. strange

install netbuei on the 98 box reboot, then uninstall it... netbios over tcp/ip is not working right in 98.

on the xp box. goto the run box and enter services.msc

now enable dhcp client service, dns client, network location awareness service, and network connections.

Thanks all, I checked everything and most everything was either automatic or manual so I set all to automatic. I also made the changes to 98. It seems the only problem I'm having now is sp2 on xp keeps starting without notification despite me repeatedly turning it off. :mean: That and I can't get anything other than basic stuff (cd, dir, etc. )to work at the command prompt. I'd like to see my ip address and ping my 98 machine. Any ideas?

Well, I should have left well enough alone. The 98 machine was able to see itself and the home network, and intermittently see the xp machine. After installing netbeui, rebooting and removing it, it can't see anything now.

I finally got both computers talking to each other. Thanks very much to everyone that offered help and suggestions.
