Windows Sp2 problems

Anybody else out there having problems with Microsoft's newest update? I ordered a CD, installed it and at first everything went ok. Now that I've played around with it a bit, I have discovered a few problems.

1. Shutdown or restart takes about 2-3 minutes using the usual shutdown button on the start menu. However, if I do a shutdown or restart through the task manager, it works fine.

2. I am unable to access the windows update control, either through the new security center, or through the system device manager.

3. Going to the windows update site causes a freeze in explorer.

Anybody else having problems? Or maybe solutions to problems?

If you do a reboot 3 or 4 times, it'll fix that little problem. I dunno about the others, though...

I installed sp2 on my friends computer. I can't acess the soundstorm control panel now. On an EPoX 8rda+. Also tried installing windvd and powerdvd trials and I get "RPC server cannot be reached, cannot run ikernel.exe" or something to that extent.

I just had a friend tell me that #2 is a widespread problem; he said to go to download.microsoft.com instead of the update page, if I remember correctly.

The thing that I found most helpful was turning off the windows firewall as well as any third pary wall you might have to DL updates and such. I couldn't access the Windows Update site until I disabled the Windows Firewall and Panda as well. Try that and see if you can access the updates.

Obviously something is hanging onto a process. This can commonly be an email application even if it is closed. Try running a disk check to correct any errors or another repair tool. You may also try running HIJACK THIS from our downloads section to see if any unwanted blue meanies are hanging about in your system.

Try disabling (turning off) automatic updates then try to connect after clearing the browser cookies, history and temp files.

Well I'll definitely give all your suggestions a try. Only thing is at this point I can't turn automatic updates off. The panel will not come up no matter how I try to activate it. If you know of a different way I can do it other than through the device manager or the security center let me know.

Update: After running Adaware, Spybot, diskcheck, regcleaner, and anything else I could think of problem still persists. I did discover that the automatic update window wasn't freezing but simply verrrrrry slow (3-4 min). So I at least got automatic updates turned off. I got this error when I tried to manually access the windows update site: [Error number: 0x800A01AD]

I've got exactly the same problem: 0X800A01AD (Windows Update v5) and slow shutdown. Switching off the Auto-Update service (services.msc) enables fast shutdown again. Seems to be some kind of conflict with this service.

I have tried many things to solve the update problem:

    Enabling ActiveX
    Switching off firewall
Adding windows update v5 as 'trusted' website
    Reinstalling SP2 without background programmes
Also tried Microsofts advice on "http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=833766 "

    Nothing helped.

    I'll keep you informed.

I am having no problems at all.
Actually windows seems a bit faster overall.

Maybe I will run into some problems later though. ;)

You guys need to use the update help and search for the errors. But you can't manually still access windows update with auto updates turned off on any of the releases I have tried either. Turn it on. Manually update and turn it off if you have to.

One other weird thing with SP2. IF you let it build up a large amount of restore points, the sum total of them can make the computer slow. So, since box here was otherwise stable I turned system restore off, defragged my boot drive and then turned it on again. Um, computer faster, Windows Update faster, reboot and startup faster. AND, the $MFT went from 99% to 85% right after deletion of aglomerated mass of restore points. Note that the SP2 INSTALL makes a set of these also (restore points) so that if you have some piled up already you might end up with a huge amount on the HD-- and the file system handlers do TRACK them, though they ARE hidden from users. And AV can SCAN them-- My F-Prot AV DOES scan my restore points and pseudo-dearchive them to look at them.

Also, if any of you who have issues with startup and shutdown are also folding, folding client does not shut down right with shutdown or restart in XP AFTER SP2 is installed, BUT if you need to restart or shut down quickly you can CTRL-ALT-DEL and do a process tree kill on the folding client program and that will if you have client 5.02 now gracefully shut down folding and then XP restarts TWICE as fast. Otherwise it waits a set time before deciding folding client or other things are not shutting down and this can take a minute or two. After two minutes one time, XP's Task Manager decided that Folding was not responding, but it was folding away-- SP2 might be sending a new process shutdown request code than did SP1(I do have a CLI folding client running as service, client 5.02 and it HAS to be shut down from task manager for a quick and painless shutdown of client when installed as service-- it no longer responds to CTRL-C in command Console window but DOEs take the Task Manager shutdown as a OS process graceful exit kill signal 15 which leads me to think that the sequence used has changed from SP1 to SP2 and please also note that the client will shut down after it finishes current frame if asked to by XP's shutdown or restart process and NOT shut down faster through Task Manager, but in the case of my XP box that could be UP TO 3-33 minutes depending on WU and I rarely wish to wait THAT long). Folding Client and SP2 are not meshing perfectly, though the above workaround does work fine.

For the Hex Abend Error (0x800 series errors) with Windows Update, there is an XP SP2 support site specifc to SP2. Some of the articles there do deal with that, though one of the possibles is UNSIGNED drivers (especially unsigned NIC or broadband modem drivers for those on broadband-- my NIC drivers are signed, no broadband modem drivers are on the XP box nor are any router drivers, it works, so that is something to look at maybe for those of you with this issue). Another possible is a thing very recently patched, folks who use VPN and loopback ports other than 127.0.0.1 CAN get hangs in NETWORKING and a hung network can also slow down restarts and shutdowns from XP start menu while Task Manager is more aggressive and will just shut down networking also if needed and restart. Windows Update can also hang if you do P2P that uses VPN or use a firewall or AV that uses VPN at all internal to XP and it uses a port other than 127.0.01 for loopback (malware can do this too, XP's SP2 firewall blocks use of other than 127.0.0.1 for loopback or VPN use by default). I can say here that with signed drivers present for my hardware the only REAL HEAVIER issue I have here is the CLI Folding Client 5.02 wanting to stay working at restart or shutdown invoked from the start menu.

The windows update site would not work with automatic updates on or off. I went through the Microsoft KB and tried the various fixes but nothing worked. Finally went ahead and did a fresh install of XP and now everything works ok.

Think I'm going to do the same since nothing else helped (eg. Windows Update Troubleshooter). I've allready slipstreamed SP2 into XP.

Regarding my problems with the desktop, I'm going to try the latest BIOS update (1017).

I'm having some of the same problems on my glorious machine as well. My shutdown takes up to 3+ minuets to stop. You should of seen me the first time this happened. After getting a drink and getting ready to watch a movie with the wife. Lets just say we didn't watch a movie that night. ITs only been noticeable since I installed BF2. I don't think that has anything to do with but it's a cowink-a-dink.
Instead of fresh install how would a repair do? if you got rid of all the restore points and ran a checkdisk then repaired should it take care of most OS files conflicts.(going on the fact that no MALWARE is causing the problem)
In my case I have 60+ gigs(and building) of MP3 that I cant back up anywhere I don't want to try to re-download. I feel pretty sure that there all clean I run McAfee 8.0 enterprise and use spybot. I'm going to run hijackthis and see what else has been missed if anything.

Morty, a Repair Install shouldn't disturb any data, but not having that stuff backed up is an invitation to disaster.

You might try the file I've attached and see if it makes a difference. I had the same shutdown problem and found that installing this low-resource service from Microsoft took care of it. There is plenty of documentation on what it does if you have any questions. :)

I know not having it backed up is POOR form. I would fix that problem if I had a little bit of that green stuff or a much larger HD.

I will give that a run when I get home and see well it works for now I'll give it a look over.
    thanks

That helped program help as well as deleting all the old restore points and runing checkdisk thanks:rockon:
