Longhorn's Demise Gives Linux Its Chance

edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
Longhorn's delay may be Linux's gain, according to Linux vendors and analysts.
With Longhorn shorn of most of its most important features, such as WinFS (Windows File System), Linux supporters are hopeful that the Linux desktop can finally make inroads into the hearts and minds of corporate desktop users. Dr. Frederick Berenstein, chairman and CTO of Xandros Inc., thinks Linux can do more than just catch up with Windows. He thinks Linux can do better. "It is understandable, given the complexity of Microsoft's vision of the new [WinFS] system that they chose to remove it from Longhorn until it is fully functional. The Linux community is aware of the direction Microsoft is taking and is planning to bring comparable pervasive search capabilities to the Linux desktop," said Berenstein.

Well I think that day is coming... for example, the engine I have licenced for a game I am working on can be built for not only Windows, but Linux and even a Mac.

When I am done, it will definitly be built to do so on all platforms, I hate how many of these game developers don't build for Linux or Mac, when they can do it VERY easily. Just an example, but the Software I used in school called RenderWare is being used by many and was recently bought by EA... it can more than easily build the same game for Windows onto a Linux environment.

The only thing I can think of that gives an excuse for not having a game on a Linux or Mac system is that Microsoft "does something" to prevent it.
