Nasty spyware/adware bug on family computer

My computer got infected a few weeks ago and the good people on this forum were really helpful - so I'm hoping things go well this time around.

My family's computer is infected with some sort of spyware, adware - not sure exactly what. It keeps popping up ads left and right and I downloaded Mozilla for them because you can't use IE - it's a total mess.

The Hijack This log is below - can someone please help me clean this off?

Welcome back. You have several different pieces of adware and spyware on your system. 95% of that log is crap. This does not just "happen." You need to figure out what in your browsing habits is causing you to keep getting infected. Many, many people surf the net and never get infected like this. Someone is breaking some of the anti-spyware rules:

    - surfing questionable porn or looking for free software
    - making bad decisions when downloading from a Peer to Peer program
    - clicking YES when pop-up windows as if you want to install something

We'll get you cleaned up, but you need to be proactive in finding out who in your family is messing up your computer, where and how, and tell them to cut it out :)

If you are not sure how to do some of the things I tell you, check the links I provide for instructions.

If you have not done so already, please first Run Ad Aware and Spybot S&D.
This is explained, along with several other things, in the link above titled Steps To Take Before Posting a Hijack This Log.

Please make sure that HijackThis.exe is in its own folder, as explained here. You currently have it running from a temp folder, so it looks like you are running it straight fromthe ZIP archive. You can't do that, you need to put it in its own folder on the C drive, such as HJT, or make a Security folder, with an HJT sub-folder, and put the exe file in there. Do not run from the Zip file, as that prevents HJT from keeping backups of fixed items.

You also need to click the link in my signature to go to our Security Downloads page, and download LSP-Fix. Put that in the same folder as HJT.

Set your system to Show Hidden Files and folders.

For Windows XP or ME, Disable System Restore.

    Reboot into Safe Mode.

Run Hijack This. FIX THE FOLLOWING:

    **************

Stay in Safe mode, and run the LSP-Fix program. Fix "osmim.dll" and if it shows you an entry for "WebHancer" fix that as well.

Next, manually locate the exe and dll files in the entries above, and quarantine them.

Then, go into C: -> Windows -> Downloaded Program Files, and delete everything in there. Anything you really need will be re-downloaded on demand when you visit the website that needs them.

Reboot normally, check things out, and come back to let us know how it turned out. Post a fresh HJT log for review. If things looks clean, re-enable your system restore and set a new restore point.

Please read our article on Defeating Spyware for tips on how to improve your Internet Explorer security, or to learn how to switch to a different browser. For more general information about spyware read this page.

If you are running Windows XP, and have not yet upgraded to Service Pack 2, please do so, especially if you plan to stay on Internet Explorer. SP2 introduces some security features to help protect you from unwanted downloads in Internet Explorer. Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2 here, courtesy of Short-Media's downloads section.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please take the time to find out more about Folding For a Cure, a good cause by which your computer uses it's spare power to help search for cures to diseases. We would love to have you on our Team.

    Dexter,

OK - I followed everything step-by-step and it's looking better - does it look completely fixed?

    A couple things -

One - it's my teenage sister and her friends - I checked her history and didn't see any bad sites, but it's clear my parents haven't really implemented any rules for surfing. So I set IE security settings to high and downloaded Mozilla, which I think is a lot safer.

Two - thanks very much for your help. I'll check out the Folding for a Cure initiative.

That log looks GREAT. And I'll bet the computer runs better too, doesn't it? There is only one entry of any concern, the Wild Tangent one. That program does retain some personal information on what games a user has played online, but since it is a ncessary part of those games, it needs to be there if you want to play those games. I don't consider it a high-risk file, in fact my teenaged son uses that on my computer, and I let it stay there.

Please feel free to point your parents and your sister to our spyware articles, or print them out for them. Prevention is key. Mozilla is a good choice, but it is starting to be targetted by malware as well. We use IE at home and we rarely have problems :) If you parents wish to implement some rules, I would be happy to share some advice with them, parent-to-parent. :) Drop me a PM if you need more advice.

Hope to see you on the Team 93 announcement thread soon! :fold::fold::fold:

Oh, and for future reference, do not leave HJT on the desktop! Please make sure that HijackThis.exe is in its own folder, as explained here.

And do that Windows XP Service Pack 2 upgrade! It really does have some helpful security features and other enhancements that make your computer run better.
