Pop-ups and threats that can't be deleted ...

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me. My home computer is giving me all kinds of random pop-ups, even when i'm not on IE. I've run NAV, Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot. NAV found "threat alerts" but tells me "delete failed". I've rebooted in Safe Mode and tried to locate these threats but I'm not able to delete them manually. In other instances I can't even find the files. Ad-Aware scans, finds stuff, but some of it can't be deleted. I've included my HiJack this log below:

The lspak.dll file was found by NAV and i noticed it in the HJT log above. I tried to delete it in the HJT log but got a message that i should download an lspfix program (which i did from your website) but i'm not sure how that program works. I don't want to mess up things any more than they already are.

Any help you can give me would be great...Thanks appreciate any help i can get... :)

Yeah, you need to run LSPfix before you do anything else. Run it and click "fix", and then reboot and post a new HJT log.
  • edited September 2004
I ran the LSPFix and it said 0 found for all 4 of the items. i rebooted and then ran another NAV scan, Ad-Aware scan and Spybot scan. Ad-Aware and Spybot allowed me to delete all that was found. NAV found 3 threats: 1 was lspak.dll, and 2 others were in Recycler. I rebooted in Safe Mode and found all 3 but was only able to delete one of the "Recycler" threats. When I tried to delete the other 2, screen came up and told me couldn't delete because they were in use. I ran another HJT log and tried to check the boxes next to the lspak.dll lines but was unable to delete those lines. I saved my logs from the last time we had problems and did a comparison. There are a couple items on this HJT log that didn't appear on my last "good" log. We installed a few things since then (camera download stuff) so some of those items are probably on it, but was wondering what the "SED.exe" is for. The biggest annoying thing is that i can't delete some of this stuff. I can't believe the companies that put this pop-up crap on your computer expect to sell anyone anything!! At this point i would never purchase a Dell computer or consider attending the University of Phoenix!!!

Thanks for your time in helping me out primesuspect!!

I'm baaaccckkk ... OK I ran the LSPfix and checked the box that said i knew what i was doing (HA!). I removed lspak. I ran again and again both AdAware and Spybot. I was able to remove everthing that both those programs found. I ran a NAV scan and 6 threats were found. I was able to delete 3 of them in NAV. I rebooted in SAFE mode and located and deleted (I hope!!) 2 out of the remaining 3. The last one was something called ezinstall located in the Temporary Internet Files folder. I ran a search on anything with ezinstall in it and found 3 exe files (all in some temp folder) that i tried to delete. Still not successful in deleting all of them. Then i ran Disk Cleanup and deleted all Temporary Internet files. I emptied Recycle Bin (still in SAFE mode at this point). One of the things i searched for and tried to delete was in a folder called Recycler. I tried to empty that folder but was unsuccessful (disk write protected, program in use or some such thing). There's something in it called 12345 bla bla (some long random number) that i think might have something to do my problem, but i'm not sure (sorry, i'm rambling here  Anyway after rebooting, i ran this HJT log:

There are a couple things that are in this log that didn't appear last time i ran a final "good" log. One is SED.exe and the other is wuauclt.exe. Do you know what those are? Is there anything else i should delete?

Thanks for all your help ... :cool2: I really appreciate ...

    Wow. Now THAT'S thorough.

Okay, so here's the next step....

    Delete:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SESync] "C:\Program Files\SED\SED.exe"

    O4 - Global Startup: Search.vbs

O8 - Extra context menu item: Shorten URL - http://www.cjb.net/menuext.html

wuauclt.exe is legit - it's the new windows update module.

After you remove those, reboot, and post a new log. We're getting close.

As to the Recycler directory-- that is your Recycle Bin's directory name. You might have more than one Recycler directory, it is possible to have one on each HD "letter" drive. Also, in some malware cases, I have restarted XP (and Me and 98 SE) and had the "UNREMOVABLE" file disappear from the Recycle Bin list and the Recycler directory on some boxes that are infected with malware (file got marked deleted, XP said it had not delted it due to system perms, but on restart the journals got updated due to file itself being marked deleted and it WAS then gone). I've also run chkdsk /r on a boot volume (or scandisk) and had that same thing with an undeletable file vanishing only after restart and chkdsk run completed but NOT after a restart alone.

Some of this malware is setting VERY strange permission attribute sets on files installed by malware. They are using special access attributes that normally the file system handlers should be using only. In XP and 2000, I've run into cases where I had to literally mark both file and directory file is in as FULL ACCESS to administrator after a safe mode boot as administrator, they were SYSTEM-Only locked (they also usually had ROOT keys in registry, but I do not want to get into regedt32 talk-throughs unless we must). In those cases, after marking them full access, I could remove them. Recovery console does similar things, that is why Recovery Console is one "place" to delete these mal-files from. Second, Recovery Console will not let a Restore Point autorestore happpen in that kind of session.

This Recycler driectory, if needed, can be in fact emptied from within the Recovery Console (Install CD boot, or in fact if you install Recovery Console on HD (Pro only) you can boot to it on HD also). Attrib command, if needed, also works in XP. Attrib -s -h -r (Filename and extension here) works once you are in the recycler directory. Refind\Search for the Recycler directory in normal or safe mode XP, then get to it in the Recovery Console and attrib as needed and delete that way.

    Useless crap:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

It looks clean! Does it seem better?

OK, i got rid of the 04 line you told me to. I ran AdAware, SpyBot and NAV AGAIN and i rebooted the computer. I emptied the Recycle Bin (although there's still something in the Recycler file that i can't delete, hope that's not anything to worry about!). It all seems fixed and i haven't received any pop ups in the last hour or so. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but i think i'm good to go ... until SOMEONE makes another mistake and clicks a Yes or No instead of just Xing out of something!!! Here's my HJT log:

How does it look? Thanks again for your time and patience with me. I'll tell my friends at the coffee shop and the bar (even the strange ONE) how great your help has been  !!!
