XP Unmountable Boot Volume error-time is running out to fix it

Ok, I know there are threads sorta like this, but they don't cover the exact problem.

I have a Dell, with XP only a year and a half old, and I called them and they already decided to replace the harddrive to fix this error, and I desperately want to get my files off the old one but can't because I can't get into windows. I don't know if it's a virus or not.

When I try to boot, I get the blue screen with the unmountable boot volume, and a stop error of : 0x000000ED (0x82792848, 0xc000009c, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)

I tried using that setup screen by hitting F2, (the grey screen with the setup options I guess,) I tried setting the BIOS thing to the CDrom first, but the XP reinstall CD doesn't load. I tried the F12 and F8 options to load the CD, but it doesn't work. I get black screens with white letters telling me to hit F1 to continue or F2 for set up. When I hit F1, all I get is the same message again.

Windows won't load to any of the safe modes either, and I just get a black screen with a bunch of pathways(?) I think on there, before it goes back to the blue screen.

I'm technically challenged, so I don't know what else to do. My last option is taking it to a local technician tomorrow and having him retrieve my files for a fee. :(

If you have any friends who have PCs you could always stick your drive into their machine as a secondary disk, boot their machine off their drive and then copy the files you need off your drive onto their drive....

or you could try knoppix, which is a bootable version of linux that runs from a CD. You download knoppix and burn it to a CD, put that CD in your machine, your PC should now boot into knoppix and (here's the good bit) give you access to all your windows files so you can back them up.

Well, the computer I'm using temporarily is an 8 year old Toshiba which does not have burning capabilities.

I don't know how to remove or install a harddrive, or how to use it as a secondary one, or if it would even be compatible with such an old comp.
