service pack 1 troubles

ok here's the deal...i recently reinstalled windows, had no problems. when i went to update windows at www.windowsupdate.com, it said something like "you must have automatic update enabled to continue" so i checked and it was enabled, still got the same messege. then i tried to download sp1 from some sites, and it would install halfway then say "(system file...i forget) is in use, close all programs and press retry". i ended all programs and most processes, still nothing. i tried it in safemode with same problem. i need service pack 1! i cant even get usb2.0!!
