Wireless Questions and Gaming

edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi, just recently bought a WRT54G Linksys wireless Broudband router and I have run across a few minor probs, was wondering if you gents could educate me. I've looked all over forums on the web and you guys seem to be the most informed :)
ok.. this is it.. I mainly play games.. But Call of Duty is the one that seems to be giving me the biggest problem. When I play my game on this wireless router I lose signal at 45 second intervals.. its just a second or so long , but just enough to get me killed. Its like clock work, ever 45 seconds the connection drops or loses signal but catches back immmediatley.
Weird, I thought maybe it was a Firewall or WEP that was doing it, but both of those two items checked out, as I have turned them off and tried it without them.
Im at my wits end.. read a lot of forums. Call tech support and there peeps dun really know what the heck their talking about(very disappointing). Like I said, you guys seem like the most intelligable candidates for my prob. Seems you guys have experiance in this area.. PLs educate me here and help me fix my problem if at all possible :banghead:
thanks in advance guys

I never had issues with Linksys myself, I have owned 2 great Linksys Routers, thought neither were Wireless. But I believe I have heard similar issues as this with Linksys products in general.

Maybe you can try a NetGear?

I am no guru on Networking myself though, hopefully someone else here has a good answer for ya ;)

    EDIT//
I currently own a Netgear Wireless Router, but as I am a gamer msyelf, my gaming rig is _wired_ to prevent any problems that may arise.

Yes.. I agree with you in the sense that hardwired is better, but that would require me to runa cable all the way across my living floor to the computer and with all the walkthrough traffic here in this house.... it sux, not to mention the wife just hates it there( which is why i went wireless)Shes happy, im happy right?:) The lag spike doesnt happen when hardwired directly to the jacks and modem, only when I go wireless through tthe router, so the problem is somewhere in the wirless I think. Some guru out there, im running out of steam here
    <---- Lowly frustrated newb

Try upgrading your firmware? I didn't see that listed as something you have tried yet. Goto the linksys website, download the latest image file from the support/drivers/help section, whatever it may be. Look for your model and make sure the firmware you download is the correct one, and in your router config area you should see an area to update it at... you upload the file, it's easy, it goes through the update, then you reset everything.

You'll PROBABLY loose your configuration settings, but I never have... no promises though ;) You probably know how to get it back up and running though if you did it once before.

I've had nothing but problems with my WRT54G and USB adapters, don't know why, I'm just lucky I guess. My current B router is also giving me a similar drop problem but at longer intervals. Anyways, anything I game with gets wired into the router so I don't have these problems. I'd suggest hooking it up with some cable if its at all possible. Sorry I can't give any help, but firmware is all I can think of too.

I'd say the USB is your problem, I used to have my Cable Model connected to my PC through a USB cable, and at the time all I played was Global Ops I think it was, nothing but problems until I switched to the normal RJ45 connection.

I hate having to fix a problem with money if I don't have to, but you may want to buy a wireless PCI card.

USB adapters are terrible. Absolutely terrible.

USB for persistently bandwidth-intensive devices (Modems, network cards...) will kick your computer in the nuts and leave it crying in the street.

think if I change to PCI.. it will work fine?

There's a PCI Wireless B adapter (from Belkin) for only $10 after rebate at CompUSA. You really couldn't go wrong with that.

STAY far away from belkin carck will mess you up less. They suck horriably, Ive done like 10 installs of belkin, and had tons of problems. I switched them normally to netgear and worked awesome! Netgear is on sale this week at compusa too!
