With the mobo you chose Justin does it really need registered ram? I thought the 939 got away from that.

Nice! I was sort of wondering about going to an FX-51 or FX-53 versus the A64 series, not sure about the difference as far as gaming goes....
  • edited September 2004
Well honestly I think the price/performance ratio is any good at the moment for a socket 939 cpu or an FX

If i wanted to go for a 939 cpu with that setup i would definatly have to make cutbacks in other areas.

In real life you'll have a wee bit less that a full terabyte but it'll still make for one huge array...you could substitute 4 x 300GB maxtors and be right at the $2000 mark though.

I know the card reader is a FDD as well but if the floppy in it is USB too it might not work for boot up duties such as specifying RAID drivers or bios flashing.

Is this for yourself or for a customer? If it's for yourself, I personally believe that right now is a bad time to build a gaming rig. We're on the verge of some really neat things happening from AMD and the motherboard manufacturers - I wouldn't want so spend my hard-earned cash on a gaming rig now that will have truly obsolete technologies (such as AGP and .13 micron architecture) in a few months.

If it's for a customer, your hand is forced, and I'd be willing to work some GHoosdum magic and configure something semi-sweet.

Ghoosdum, I'd rather skimp on the case and spend more money on the memory. I can't see spending $200 on a case.

Neither can I, but I figured that Geeky would yell at me if I recommended an Antec case like I wanted to. Knock $100 off the price of the case and you can put some nice TwinX in there, or a second 120GB WD SATA drive.

    Well sweet.

I just put together the system and it will only boot if only one of the OCZ modules is inserted. I noticed that OCZ doesn't appear on their recommended memory list

No matter what configuration I try, the thing will only post if one stick is inserted. As soon as I add the second, nothing. I've switched them up, to make sure I don't have a bad stick.

    Blehgh..

I'll probably have to sell this matched pair and buy a different brand.

which board did you end up getting? i've always liked mushkin memory, never had a problem with them...picked ocz because from reviews and stuff they were highly recommended. i use black mushkin level 2 memory myself but then again i don't have a 64 board or cpu.

No, my customer is a basement gamer with a headset - he doesn't do lan parties.

The board is an Asus A8V Deluxe.

RAM is for sale in the Deal Depot if you're interested :D

    Interesting:
The ASUS A8V Deluxe, a representative mainboard for the K8T800 Pro chipset supported by the socket 939 Athlon 64, has been qualified as 100% compatible with all Mushkin PC3200 and PC3500 Black series. The A8V supports up to 4GB unbuffered ecc, and non-ecc DDR 266/333/400 memory, please refer to chart in manual for memory configurations. When using a single module you must use DIMM slot B1.

What's the 'basement gamer' getting in the rest of his rig, Brian?
