bestfriends

I tried using the removal guide, but it didn't work and I didn't have the time to try and figure out what had happened quite frankly. I did a format and ghost of my computer and I was done with it. If any of you are keeping tabs on the bestfriends, I don't know if this is a new one or not. Check out http://pictures.blogsite.org/mybestfriends.scr If anyone is following this nasty little bugger, I'd like for you to please show me what was your guide to removing it if you could. I'm interested in it! I'd also like to say that you gentlemen are doing a great job of helping people out around here! Keep up the great work!

Regards,
Casey

PS - my girlfriend is no longer allowed on my laptop...she's gotten da boot!!!

I tried using your guide which did not work. For "ha-ha" I downloaded the file from the website that I provided earlier. I have tried removing this nuisance to no avail. Here is my HJT log of now:

I'm also encountering an ActiceX control continuously trying to install itself when IE is launched and going from web page to web page. I cannot figure out what ActiveX control is trying to install itself. With SP2 installed, IE is currently blocking it, but it is a nuisance!

Can you post details about that particular item, or a screenshot?

Log looks better. It's a good thing you have SP2 blocking that thing, or else you'd probably get reinfected.

Yeahh I was going through everything getting rid of some things...you found a few I was unsure of...as for this ActiveX...I wish I knew how to see what is trying to be installed...I know there has to be a log somewhere of what is going on...MSFT logs everything...here's a screen shot for ya!

It is really time to use a different browser. Check out the article in my sig (How did you get infected....) and try out FireFox or something.

I mean, you can try dumping all of your DPFs (ActiveX controls):

which means you'll have to redownload some of them on demand (which is not really a big deal). See if that fixes the problem.

I removed all of the above mentioned files with no luck...I also went through the HJT log myself and could not find anything else to remove...this still happens...it happens only when IE starts...I know I can use another browser, but I am just curious as to what is causing this...I don't know where else to look...does anyone have any other ideas?? Thanks for everyone's help thus far

Try resetting your internet explorer settings - go to "Tools --> internet options --> programs" and click the button that says "reset web settings". Then click the "advanced" tab and click "restore defaults".

Reboot, and see if the problem is still there.
