    Welcome to short-media.

Follow my instructions carefully, as doing a single thing wrong will make this whole exercise pointless, and you will be reinfected.

First, remove the following using HJT:

Okay, now this is the fun part:

Close Hijack This, and then PULL THE POWER CORD OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER. Yes, that's right, do NOT properly shut it down, just yank the cord.

Now, turn it back on, and when it starts to boot, rapidly press the F8 key to get to a boot menu before windows starts. Select "Command Prompt Only" (it might be called DOS mode too, can't remember), and then it will boot to something that looks like this:

    C:\

At that prompt, type CD WINDOWS
    then type CD SYSTEM

Your prompt should look like this:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

    type ATTRIB -H -S CRCUO.DLL

    then type DEL CRCUO.DLL

    then type CD ..

    then CD .. again
(That's CD followed by a space and then two dots, then enter)

    Then type: DELTREE TV MEDIA

it will ask for a confirmation. say yes.

after you do that, reboot the computer (just hit ctrl-alt-delete) and then boot into windows normally, and post a new HJT log for me.

Hi, and thanks....I went and removed the files in HJT, went and shut down the computer...Brought it back up in cmmand prompt...But whne i went and typed in ATTRIB -H -S CRCUO.DLL It said file not found.....

Well any way here is the new HJT Log....Maybe i didn't remove something i was supposed to, OR i didn't remove something?? I was really careful at removing what i was supposed to.....

When you shut it down, did you just yank the power cord, or did you click "Start --> shut down this computer" ?

This is important for me to know before we continue...
  • edited September 2004
    I yanked.... :)

Okay, let's do this.. shut down, reboot into the command prompt, and CD into WINDOWS\SYSTEM again...

    Then type DIR /A:H

(just like that - DIR space slash A colon H)
    enter

If you see a random-looking name . DLL (like crrca.dll or hemne.dll) then you should do the attrib command on it:

    ATTRIB -H -S randomname.dll

    After that, type

    REN randomname.dll DELETE.OLD

Which is going to rename that file to DELETE.OLD

Then, reboot and post a new log.

That didn't work either, but here is the new HJT log...I didn't see anything like the above you mentioned...

Here's a different approach for you to try, it has helped a couple of users with this problem on Win 98.

Download the program Killbox from our Security downloads page (link in my signtaure.) Unzip it to it's own folder. Run the program. In the bottom right hand corner you will see a drop-down box labelled (System Process.) Drop that down, and select the active process that is likely to be your main infection reloader. In your case, that will be:

    MFCWW.EXE
    WO.EXE

Once you have selected that file name, click the yellow triangle with the ! inside it to end that process.

Next, at the top of the window, use the folder icon to browse to each of these files one at a time:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATLJC.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\MFCWW.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB OFFER\WO.EXE

Check off "end Explore shell while killing file." Press the red X button to delete each file. If that does not delete it, mark the file for "delete on reboot." Do not reboot after each file, we will do that once at the end.

    Then browse to:

    C:\WINDOWS\system\ddbcw.dll

and select it. Turn on the option "unregister dll before deleting." Then delete it. If that does not delete it, mark the file for "delete on reboot."

Then remove the entries in HJT which match up to those file names:

I also want you to fix this entry:

    O16 - DPF: v2cab - http://searchmiracle.com/cab/v2cab.cab

Do this in regular mode first. If it does not work, try it in Safe Mode, except that the exe will probably not be running as a system process in safe mode, so all you will need to do is delete it.

Let us know how that works, post another log for review.
