SIGGRAPH, SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 28, 2003)—Suppose, instead of taking months to create, the breathtaking computer-graphics-generated scenes from any of this summer's blockbuster movies could be rendered with cinematic quality in real time. Suppose a car designer could model a car that's indistinguishable from a photograph. Or imagine a jet fighter training simulation that could look not "just pretty good," but be so exact that you couldn't distinguish the simulated scenery from the real thing. Or suppose a physician could see tumors one-third the size of what could previously be identified. These things are not only possible—they have already begun. The new frontier in graphics realism has been established with developments to the OpenGL® application programming interface (API), released by SGI (NYSE: SGI) and the OpenGL Architecture Review Board (ARB).

This is fantastic news!

So, will any card support the new standard, or is it like DirectX, with my old Geforce being a DirectX 7 part and my Radeon being a DirectX 8 part?

I think we have to see that, but now MS will have some competition. I think the make an assload of money from producers of both videocards and games that have to pay a premium amount for the licence to use DirectX. This is what i guess so don´t quote me on that. We will all benefit from it both in more, better, faster and cheaper cards in the end.

    I borrowed this from opengl.org:

    OpenGL Drivers for Windows XP
    * OpenGL works great under ALL versions of Windows (as well as Unix and Mac OS). Each manufacturer makes their own video drivers so you need to visit their website and download their latest OpenGL driver for your particular video card.

half-life definitely works way better under opengl than directx. directx support was thrown in half ass and hasn't really been fixed as far as i know.
