Computer keeps rebooting

edited September 2004 in Hardware
My PC keeps switching off. It seems to be getting more frequent, sometimes as often as once every 30 minutes. It then reboots and sometimes goes through two or more boot sequences whilst trying to restart.

I had a problem recently with a variant of Coolsearch virus (in the form of homesearch assistant) it was such a pain I decided to reformat the hard disk, and reinstall XP. So the Operating system was clean?? but I have installed most of my software and XP SP1 from Microsoft.

What can I do to investigate why the PC keeps rebooting? ANy advice welcome. Better post this before it goes down again.

First lets see if it reboots in safe mode as well, this will tell us if it is hardware or Sofware (kinda).

Safe Mode is reached by tapping the F8 key when you first turn the machine on. Keep tapping till you come to the boot screen with the words SAFE MODE at the top, use up and down arrow keys and select safe mode then hit enter twice.

if it doesnt reboot itself in safe mdoe then there is software that has been loaded unto the machine that is effecting the machine.

do you get any kind of error window, or msg before it reboots,

    No error windows.

Damn! left it on over night and didn't re-boot? I wonder if a certain software needs to be active for it to reboot?. Or perhaps it is temperamental hardware?

Thanks so far LN. I will get some work strated and see if it switches off again.
