typing "too soon" hangs comp (hardware issue?)

edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
Run a multi OS system, but all are Win 2k or XP - Athlon xp 2100 + Asus A7v8x mb.. Happens on each OS, so is this a hardware issue???

Example - I create a new folder and immediately type the folder name (machine freezes and must reboot) - or... I create a new folder... count to 3... then begin typing... machine ok. Same thing happens in IE with a search window - start typing immediately and hang the system.. wait 3 seconds, all is ok... Whenever filling out a text box, or renaming a file, etc. typing without first pausing hangs the system.

What could it be?

Thanks!

Are you using a usb or a ps2 keyboard? If you are using a ps2, then try using a usb keyboard. That way you can test out your usb or ps2 ports. That is where I would start at.

AND, if this is a USB keyboard, look at your Legacy USB settings in BIOS. IF this is a PS\2 keyboard, it is possible the keyboard has a sticky switch or switches, or that someone somehow enabled TYPEMATIC settings in BIOS OR needs to do same. Check the driver version also, see if a newer one is out. ALSO, weirdly enough, SOME of the PS\2 chips on boards will actually pass KEYBOARD keystrokes, though wierdly, IF one manages to plug a PS\2 KEYBOARD cable into a PS\2 MOUSE connector. If connectors on back of box are colored, GREEN is for mouse, PURPLE for keyboard (almost always). REVERSE the two, timings go nuts for the ports, or sometimes mouse semms real flaky when both a PS\2 mouse and PS\2 keyboard are plugged into worng connector. For older boards without color coding of ports, the PS\2 port nearest motherboard "board" is typically\USUALLY (not always, just mostly) keyboard, and mouse is other one.
