Mini DV to Computer...

edited September 2004 in Internet & Media
I have just bought a JVC GR-DVL510 digital video camera that records on Mini DV's. It has a USB connection cable but it seems to be for still photos only, or at least I can not see anything in the instructions about transfering video images accross via this. I am wanting to be able to transfer the video fotage onto my Computer so that I can possibly edit it and then can make DVD's or send small video clips via email. Could someone please tell me if this is possible and what hardware and software I will need to be able to do this.

I hope I am posting this in the right section, sorry I am new to this and a little confused

You're in the right section. You need a DV capturing software, like AViD or (shudder) windows movie maker. (FCP or iMovie on Mac)

The photos that the camera takes are just files, and can be Downloaded right onto the computer, as I'm sure you already figured out. Meanwhile, the DV, being on tape, must be captured durring playback by a program that is designed for it. If your camera didn't come with some software, look for the basic software on your computer. I'm not sure if iMovie comes with the MacOS, but I'm pretty sure that WMM comes with XP.
