Hi, i just installed winxp 64bit for the first time and ive run into a bunch of problems. i have via ac'97 sound and its weird, everything is like high pitched and quick, from general windows noises to mp3s, no matter what driver i try. alot of usb items will not install (avertv usb tv tuner, hp deskjet 3520). in my device manager i have an unknown device with no hints as to what it is, 2 mass storage controllers, pci simple communications controller and my wireless card and aforementioned usb stuff all show up as other with no drivers at all.
edit:i just uninstalled the sound and reinstalled VIAs 64 bit hyperion drivers and now i have no sound at all. i removed those and installed the realtek ac'97 ones over them and still no sound and i cant enable windows sound in control panel because for some reason my admin acct doesnt have admin rights. also my printer now installs but then fails and says RPC server is unavailable.

my setup is a sager np4750
64bit 3200+
via with 64bit drivers and via ac'97 sound(bootup says K8 VT3838+8235)
1gig ram
9700mobile

any ideas? if i can sort out the sound and printer stuff id be extremely happy. i do enjoy the increase in speed, but i need to be able to print and this sound is just too annoying.

your sound problems may relate back to some of the other drivers you don't seem to be installed correctly.

Your printer is going to probbaly be a no go unless you can find something similiar in the same family and use it for partial functionality.

Sometimes when a bunch of stuff is sharing the same IRQ on the initial install Windows just doesnt get it all sorted out right. VIA has updates 64bit chipset drivers don't they?

Try disabling a bunch of the stuff in the bios and rebooting clean with maybe just the LAN for starters. Use the "show hidden devices" option in the device manager and delete the remants of all the old or non working devices. If your not using extra ide/sata/raid get rid of them and disable them for now in the bios. Reboot and see if you can come up clean and see if your sharing any irq's. Then re-enable devices one by one with a clean reboot each time.

They have had several XP 64bit versions released and make sure you have the latest version and see if VIA has a updated driver pack also.

Your jammed on stuff like a TV tuner card. Might be years if you ever see that baby supported.

I have the same problem on the AC'97 but the bad news is all info i have found is AC'97 Windows: In development and Linux: In development.
If I find a driver it might be a bata too. I will post it if i do.

I had the same printer problem (I have a Deskjet 5650) and contacted HP. They e-mailed me this which you may find helpful:

...install the Universal printer driver using the steps given below. This is a basic printer driver and therefore may not include all the features provided by the actual printer driver.

    1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
    2. Click Printers and Other Hardware, then click Printers and Faxes.
    3. From the 'Pick a task' options, click Add a printer.
    4. In the 'Add Printer Wizard' window, click Next.
    5. Select, Local printer attached to this computer. Remove the check
mark in the box next to 'Automatically detect and install my Plug
    and Play printer'.
    6. In the menu box next to 'Use the following port', select LPT1.
    7. Click Next.
    8. In the 'Manufacturer' list, select HP.
    9. In the 'Printers' list, select HP Deskjet 550C.
    10. Click Next.
    11. Click Next. (It is recommended that you leave the default printer
    name).
    12. Select 'Yes' to set the printer driver as default.

CAUTION: If 'No' is selected you will have to ensure that the
HP Deskjet 550C printer driver is selected in the Print
window within the application, each time you print.

    13. Click Next.
    14. Select 'No' to skip the test page
    15. Click Next.
    16. Click Finish to complete the installation.

NOTE: When the Printer Wizard is copying files, you may be
prompted to insert the Windows CD-ROM into the CD drive.
If Windows is unable to locate the files or you receive a
message about missing files, ensure that the Copy files
from box shows the correct CD-ROM drive letter. If you
are unable to install the driver from the Windows CD or the
disk provided by your computer manufacturer, contact the
computer manufacturer or Microsoft for assistance locating
    these drivers.

    17. Once the driver is installed, the HP Deskjet 550C printer icon will
be listed in the Printers and Faxes window.

Close the Printers and Faxes window and attempt printing.
It won't have any bells or whistles, but it'll put ink on the page.

As far as drivers go, I'd uninstall everything, then start by installing the VIA Hyperion 4in1's followed by whatever VIA AC97 driver they have posted (if any).

They have had several ac97 drivers depending on the chipset. Some mimic the ac97 but not close enough.

    Check the forums at

    http://www.planetamd64.com/

Its the best and most up to date source I have found for all amd64 drivers and info.

I have just went thru a nightmare with my HP4 after an SP2 upgrade. Finally went into device mgr and deleted my LPT1 port and rebooted. Change my BIOS setting from ECP to EPP during the reboot. Finally, my HP 4 is printing again.
