I have a few more questions...

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Well, I'm looking now at how my computer is setup compared to my desk, and the fan that releases and takes in air from the left is right next to a piece of wood right next to it.

The fans in the back are also next to the heater only used in winter :P, but they can take in air as their is no wood directly behind them, approximately 1 foot between the wall and the heater is right there.

Here is my sisoftware sandra reading:

Considering upgrading my hard drive, and maybe even my mobo.

What do you guys think?

I think that's an awfully long post but wer're confused as to what we should think about?

Should we think about your wood heater?

    Should we think about temperatures?

Should we think about suggesting upgrades?

Should we think about the weather?

    Could you be more specific?

Well, since it is a laptop, unless the modem is a PCMCIA modem, the only thing I can think of is check the fans and maybe consider a modem upgrade to a HARDWARE v.92 modem in the form of a USR PCMCIA Type III hardware modem.

Software driven modems can be flaky and are tending to be slower responding to COM events, all the drivers and many of the protocols are also taking up CPU time slices. With a HARDWARE modem, protocols are handled by modem internals, and are not taking up CPU time slices (part of the CPU's available processing at any one moment). A USB HARDWARE modem might also be an option here, but I am not sure of this for YOUR Laptop. WINModem approx. = Soft Modem.

Since this is a laptop, actually the FAN thing might simply be in error. Sandra was intended for desktops mostly, and modern Intel Laptops tend to use variable speed fans. SO, if the laptop wasn only running Sandra when you benched, the fan might be fine and not running at very high speed at all compared to a desktop fan.

    it's not a laptop.

dj, for monitoring temps and voltages and fans, I much rather use motherboard monitor, which was designed to monitor these things.

You can download MBM from our site on this page if you want to install it.:)

    i have it.

my computer is 100 degrees fahrenheit last time i tested it.

I take any monitoring from sandra with a large grain of salt myself. For monitoring stuff like temps and fan speeds and voltages, MBM is much better than sandra. I've seen sandra wrong too many times with temps and fan speeds myself.
