is it stupid to do a upgrade?

I was looking at a amd64 2800+ and asus mobo. I have a 2500+ (10x200) with nf7-s. Would it be a nice upgrade or would I be wasting my money?

You are bumping up in technology but I don't think you'll be floored by the performance jump. It won't be night and day but it will be a bit faster...for the first 15 minutes until you get used to it.

Example: I have dual 2800+ MP processors on a RAID. I moved my system over to an FX-53 with SATA single drives.

Yes the benchmarks are faster...FX-53 beats the MP but...dual processors and a RAID makes the system "feel" smoother. Bottom line: I think I prefer the feel of the dual processor system even though it isn't technically faster.

You may want to consider other alternatives...RAID if you haven't done so and wait a bit for a larger processor jump.

    IMHO

In the interest of folding, which might be better?

I'm for that. About six years ago I added a second computer and it has made a huge difference. Upgrades are a tough call right now; most relatively modern computers will do pretty much anything you ask of them. My second rig Folds (duh!) and also serves as a backup for my critical data (music, old-time radio shows, and personal email from primesuspect). I sleep better at night knowing that if my main rig goes up in smoke I will not lose everything. Backups are simple - copy things to the second computer, sit back, relax. Did I mention Folding? :)

Ditto MM and prof... I haven't really felt comfortable since I dismantled and sold off my secondary rig. I'm about to build a new secondary (albeit underpowered) to play with Linux and to backup some critical stuff.

Building a new, fast machine is not stupid.
Provided, of course, that you keep the old one folding.
The new box won't feel faster.
Maybe a raid controler and some fast drives would be a better bet.

I am pretty sure you r wasting your money because the only thing u will get is 64 bit computing which i do't think is needed by a home user upto now, if u r really interested in upgrading go for fx-53 with hell of fsb and integrated memory controller , it is a real performer

Check out the Folding forums, there is a sticky in there with everything you need. Basically, F@H is using your unused cpu cycles to help find a cure for cancer, etc.... we all do it here at SM :)

As far as an upgrade goes, I don't think you will notice any difference myself. I mean heck I still use a 1700+ running at 1.9Ghz with 512 ram. I don't need to upgrade for about another year or so I would say, just for the things I use my computer for. It is nice to have a second computer. I use my second computer to backup all my files, bible music, music, and the second hard drive in it to learn linux.
